This week, the promise was broken. It lasted less than six months. Now that Internet Explorer IE8 beta 2 is released, we know that many, if not most, pages viewed in IE8 will not be shown in standards mode by default. The dirty secret is buried deep down in the «Compatibility view» configuration panel, where the «Display intranet sites in Compatibility View» box is checked by default. Thus, by default, intranet pages are not viewed ...

It doesn't surprise me at all, MS backing down on a promise. What's o wrong is the "broken page" icon for standards websites. WTH?

Speculation about who John McCain would name as his running mate focused on Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin after reports circulated early Friday that two short-listers — Mitt Romney and Tim Pawlenty — were out out of the running.

The lastest reports say that neither Mitt Romney nor Tim Pawlenty are McCain’s pick. Add to that the news that a charter aircraft flew from Anchorage, Alaska to Dayton, Ohio where McCain will be announcing his choice, and it looks very likely that Sarah Palin will be on the ticket in November.

When you add a web site like Flickr or Google Reader to FriendFeed, FriendFeed's servers constantly download your feed from the service to get your updates as quickly as possible. FriendFeed's user base has grown quite a bit since launch, and our servers now download millions of feeds from over 43 services every hour. One of the limitations of this approach is that it is difficult to get updates from services quickly without FriendFeed's crawler ...

A better proposal than relying on conditional GETs. (Why? Less overall polling.) Neat.

Barack Obama’s recent decline in the polls to the point of an exact tie with John McCain last week can be explained largely by some defection from conservative Democrats.

Have you ever been stumped in finding the right words to search for? Back when I was planning my wedding, I had a list of wedding songs in mind, but the problem was that I couldn't remember any of the artist names or song titles. So I started typing into the Google search box parts of the lyrics that I did remember -- and like magic, I saw suggestions with the artist name and song ...

This feature is amazing! I've used it for a while and I'm psyched to see it move to the main page. That will make it easier to combine with the still-Labs feature of keyboard shortcuts.

I like Google Suggest, but I am not sure I would want to see it every time I visit the Google homepage. If I need a search query auto-completed, I typically use the Google toolbar. Hopefully, Google will provide a way to disable the suggestions for those who prefer not to see them.

Gay Patriot points it out: I suppose as the weekend passes, I may have more to say about presumptive Democratic nominee Barack Obama’s choice of Delaware’s senior Senator as his running mate. For the moment, I will echo Bruce’s point that it does seem a lot like George W. Bush’s choice of Dick Cheney in 2000, an older political veteran with foreign policy experience from a small state that was already a lock for their ...

Would John McCain selecting Joe Lieberman as his running mate give Republicans a better chance at winning in November? Bill Kristol thinks so, but I tend to disagree.
