Cowards Anonymous passes along an Australian PCWorld piece that begins "Countries whose appeals were dismissed regarding the ISO/IEC's approval of Microsoft's OOXML as an international standard are questioning the judgment and relevance of the ISO/IEC and the standards they approve. In a statement made at the Congresso Internacional Sociedade e Governo Electronico (CONSEGI) 2008 conference, representatives from three of the four countries that appealed against an April 1 vote to approve OOXML as a standard ...

A “reliable source” who has nailed some things before (okay, it’s just a little bird) hears on the grapevine that come the 23rd of September, there’s going to be a sub-$1000 touchscreen-based Mac dropping on us. Not only that, but 10-bit HDMI out from the GPU, great for hi-def buffs (probably not on the <$1K rig). Not going too far out on a limb, but let's still treat it like the filthy, contemptible rumor it ...

Don LaFontaine, the voice of countless movie trailers, is dead at 68. I liked this tribute from the Washington Post: In a world of people who all have some sort of private omniscient voice-over running things inside their heads, sometimes God, sometimes Mom, and sometimes Don LaFontaine...In a world where marketing is far more important than content...came one man...with a Voice. Check out a brief bio video of LaFontaine with his voice in action. (link)

HP has decided to join the glossy button bandwagon, and now the logo almost looks like a SUPERHERO!! (I don’t mean that in a good way though) They have decided to move away from the rounded rectangle and go with a circle. The HP now has a “fancy” bevel to it as well. For some reason i also see the word NO in the new logo now. Overall I don’t think this is an improvement ...

It seems that tucked away in the folds of IFA, there is a tiny laptop taking the ancient Commodore family name. Some enterprising Norwegians wrote it up, and included in the post what appears to be the hottest girl I have ever seen. I don’t know if you can tell (I’m really good at photoshopping) but she’s not actually holding the Commodore — I just craftily made it look like she is so I could ...

Christian Prickaerts, a researcher with FoxIT had this to say about the IE8 beta:"The privacy option in this beta is mainly cosmetic. For a forensic investigator, retrieving the ...

The 802.11n standard for Wi-Fi may still be technically a draft specification, but the IEEE has now completed the 802.11r specs, making a new standard for Wi-Fi roaming. Why should you care about this? It's designed for those moments when a Wi-Fi-connected device moves between hotspots, something the original 802.11 specs didn't have in mind. Typically a transition between spots involves a drop and re-associate delay of around 0.1 seconds, which is enough to drop ...

Many readers are sending in coverage of a demo at Intel's developer forum of a wirelessly powered 60-watt bulb. The NYTimes gives background on Intel's improvement to the 'wireless resonant energy link' technology pioneered at MIT, where researchers achieved 50% efficiency of power transmitted several meters via magnetic fields. Intel reached 75% efficiency. Now they just have to make those coils a lot smaller.Read more of this story at Slashdot.
