Here's a funny short video of Chinese people being exposed to fortune cookies (an American invention) for the first time: Americans find high emotional attachment to the slips inside their cookies, looking to them for winning lottery numbers and becoming upset when the fortunes inside are unfortunate. The Chinese, on the other hand, would often tell me after trying the curved vanilla-flavored wafers, “Americans are so strange, why are they putting pieces of paper in ...

Hilarious! I think we all know that fortune cookies were invented here, but we never really thought about this sort of interaction.

It's a case of what Dave Chappelle would call "keeping it real gone wrong." In their zeal to rid the world of typos, a pair of asshats defaced a 60-year-old sign painted by architect Mary Colter. Jeff Michael Deck of Somerville, and Benjamin Douglas Herson, of Virginia Beach, Va., members of the Typo Eradication Advancement League, or TEAL, pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court of defacing the irreplaceable Grand Canyon sign, which had been a ...

Carbohydrates don't just screw up your blood-sugar: they release free radicals that kill appetite-suppressing cells. The research is from a Nature article by Dr Zane Andrews, a neuroendocrinologist with Monash University's Department of Physiology. "The more carbs and sugars you eat, the more your appetite-control cells are damaged, and potentially you consume more," Dr Andrews said. Dr Andrews said the attack on appetite suppressing cells creates a cellular imbalance between our need to eat and ...

Filed under: Misc. Gadgets Those Apple "Get a Mac" ads have long been an annoyance to Microsoft and to Bill Gates in particular. No surprise as an emboldened Apple with rising market share has continued to ratchet up the venom with quips like, "fear of switching is the foundation of customer loyalty for PCs," found in its latest TV ad. Now Microsoft is fighting back. Microsoft's new $300 million campaign (one of Redmond's largest ever) ...

Pictured above are members of Argentina's olympic soccer team, celebrating their trip to the Olympics in Beijing. Although they're not the first Olympic team to strike this tasteless pose, they are the first to do so while wearing their corporate sponsor's name on their jerseys. Oddly enough, one of the other teams that posed for a picture while making the "slanty-eyed" face did so for an actual ad for a Spanish courier company. This time, ...

Drake Bennett of the Boston Globe wrote an article on the various ways con men gain their marks' trust, including body language, verbal language, and facial expressions. When deciding who to trust, the research suggests, people use shortcuts. For example, they look at faces. According to recent work by Nikolaas Oosterhof and Alexander Todorov of Princeton's psychology department, we form our first opinions of someone's trustworthiness through a quick physiognomic snapshot. By studying people's reactions ...

Tightwad, Missouri, population 63, doesn't have much, but it does have a bank. A bank where the most common question people ask isn't "Do you have free checking?" It's: "Is this actually a real bank?" Well, the answer is "yes." From the Washington Post: Tightwad Bank may be quirky and unproven, but it is a genuine bank with a real charter and a real vault and a pair of real bankers in charge. For good ...

If you've ever wanted more control over incoming phone calls at home or at the office, setting up a PBX system could be the solution, and Geek.com's John Rogers has a tutorial for you. He explains what a PBX is: A PBX or "Private Branch Exchange" is like a miniature phone company/switch in your own office/house. The PBX is responsible for making sure calls are routed properly. Situation: when Joe wants to dial Suzy in ...

Schedule phone calls to any phone with web site getmooh (get me out of here). The idea behind this webapp, as the name suggests, is that you can schedule a call to give yourself an excuse to get out of an awkward situation or mind-numbing meeting. You can choose from one of dozens of pre-recorded messages to play when you answer, from an angry Alec Baldwin to an absurd but probably effective instructional message that ...

Kevin Purdy via Lifehacker shared by 7 people Wired's How-To Wiki details how the bane of many an unlucky car-owner's existence, the ability to start a car without a key, can be mastered and used for good, particularly if you find yourself stuck somewhere without a key or an ignition that just won't cooperate. It starts out with a low-tech screwdriver hack and moves onto the electrical disembowelment of the steering column you've seen in ...
