Last Friday's Science Friday on NPR featured a really exciting segment on a "microscope on a chip," an ingenious, $10 method for building a microscope using a digital camera controller. The 17-minute segment runs through a number of potential applications for this, from cellphone microscopes that could autonomously identify hazardous bacteria in water samples (for cameraphones, the cost of implementing microscope functionality is about $1), to implanting cancer-detecting scopes in high-risk patients, to putting hundreds ...

The long run-up to the launch may be a bit boring to watch, but if you are having a lazy Saturday afternoon as I am, I do suggest this as more entertaining veg-out viewing than, say, ...

Over a year has passed since Google completed the acquisition of feed massaging and hosting service Feedburner, and today some users now finally have their feeds hosted on what appears to be Google’s servers and infrastructure. At Techcrunch we have always been big fans of Feedburner, and their widgets and RSS subscriber counts have adorned almost all of our sites since their first days. At some point in the past 12 hours, the feed URL ...

Science fiction illustrator Dave McKean's new DVD, Keanoshow, is everything you'd want from a DVD of short films made by the best and weirdest illustrator working in the field today. McKean may just be my favorite genre artist (certainly the cover he did for my novel Someone Comes to Town, Someone Leaves Town is my all-time favorite in a field full of strong contenders), and the short films here really bring McKean's distinctive aesthetic to ...
