From my Real Business column I went on holiday last week. In the past going on holiday has been a hugely traumatic experience. I try to get everything ‘done’ before I leave, then phone into the office every day to make sure business is going well and check that people are where they’re supposed to be, doing what they’re supposed to be doing. Ultimately, I spend each day waiting for the almost inevitable call that ...

Unsurprisingly I am confident that the answer will be NO. It isn’t because Linkedin is not capable or doesn’t have the desire, far from it they are very keen to get our corporate recruitment market, as can be seen with their Coroprate Solution and apart from that we all know how good the product is. I have seen threats before, I thought 20 years ago when I first got into this industry it would be ...

I give a lot of speeches, mostly telling people how to manage Generation Y, and how to manage their careers so that they are not jealous of Generation Y. My charm, I think, is that I don’t prepare a speech. I never know, exactly, what I’ll say when I stand up. It works for me—no one ever says I’m boring. What they say instead is that I talk fast. When they are being nice, people ...

A well run sales competition can stimulate and motivate both you and your peers like nothing else. Some of you will be lucky enough to work for companies that run great sales competitions. Some of you won’t. But you know what? It doesn’t matter. Some of the best and most successful sales competitions that I have seen have been set up by the team, for the team. There’s nothing stopping you and your buddies getting ...

Do you know the salary of every employee at your company? I think you should. I mean, who is being protected by secret salaries? Certainly not the employee—the more transparent salaries are, the more accurately an employee can assess his or her value to a company. You’d think that companies benefit from secret salaries and that’s why they keep them secret, but really, if salaries were 100% accurate—perfectly pegged at the employee’s worth to the ...

i've never really understood the concept of the secret salary. when i worked with the navy, there was a very definite payscale that showed your pay grade and number of years of service. everyone knew where they stood. corporates on the other hand, make payscale seem like a secret handshake for HR. That's the one department I think should be overhauled in almost every company.

Yeah! I just whined about how much I hate nonprofit job postings that say "salary commiserate with experience" or "include your salary request with resume". It's in your budget. Gawd!

I love ideas like this: bubble-wrap calendars. You pop each day when it's done. A company from Brooklyn sells them for $50--$50 for bubble wrap! I love the margins as much as the idea. Put this one in the "why didn't I think of that?" category.

Do you want to know the best way to motivate referral sources? Well, perhaps you’ve guessed it’s not money or for that matter direct compensation of any form. There will certainly be exceptions to this, but the perfect referral motivation is to tap our deep seated human need for community. People get great pleasure from offering help and knowing they can be called upon as a source of reliable information. When referral sources are motivated, ...

Might be of interest to investors, readers, writers, designers, marketers, etc. Or not... Two months ago, I got a Kindle. It's a fascinating device, unlike almost any other launched by a significant tech company. Here's why: 1. It's for women and women are buying it. The bestseller list of Kindle titles is much less tech-heavy than Amazon's list was in the early days of the web. An Oprah book is #1. And the colors and ...

There are a lot of rules for first-time managers. For example, never hold a meeting without an agenda, because if you don’t know what you’re going to do there, then no one else will know what you’re doing, either. But the rule about agendas is a great example, because, like most rules for good management, it is about being kind. Your job as a manager is to make sure your employees are growing and learning ...
