Marc Andreessen, whose first start-up, Netscape Communications introduce the consumer web to millions, thanks to its Netscape browser, seems to be suitably impressed by Google’s recently released Chrome browser. He waxed eloquent about Chrome during an onstage conversation with Portfolio magazine contributing editor Kevin Maney at The Churchill Club in Palo Alto, Calif. “Any desktop application that has not been implemented in the browser is now going to be implemented in the browser,” Andreessen said. ...

September 3, 2008TraceMonkey UpdateWe have been busy, mostly fixing bugs for stability, but also winning a bit more performance, since TraceMonkey landed on mozilla-central, from which Firefox 3.1 alpha-stage nightly builds are built. Tonight's builds include a fix for the bug that ilooped a SunSpider test (my apologies to those of you who suffered that bug's bite). But what I'm sure everyone wants to know is: how do we compare to V8?Here are the results from ...

There's absolutely nothing interesting about what the GOP is doing here in Minnesota. The party itself is like an enormous cadaver whose funeral is being held in the Xcel Center, and the wakes thrown by its drunken hedonist powerbrokers bear more than a passing resemblance to Roman vomitoriums. Not that the Democrats in Denver were much more interesting -- more lifelike, to be certain, as the baton of power and pork passed over to them, ...

There's a famous saying by John Gilmore, that "the internet interprets censorship as damage and routes around it." However, that saying may apply equally to other "damage" beyond censorship -- and that includes spying, slow connections and many other things. In fact, with it being considered somewhat common knowledge that US intelligence agencies frequently tap into internet traffic coming through the US from elsewhere, more and more countries are working hard to make sure their ...

About the just-leaked Google Chrome browser: Google also say they’re using a “multi-process design” which they say means “a bit more memory up front” but over time also “less memory bloat.” When web pages or plug-ins do use a lot of memory, you can spot them in Chrome’s task manager, “placing blame where blame belongs.” If this is true and there's a process manager which allows you to see how many resources are being consumed ...

Twitter is a river of commentary a mile wide and an inch deep. Ephemeral posts whiz by at a rate that make it nearly impossible to track, and yet any one of them could be an opportunity to reach out and connect to a friend or a potential customer, or to resolve a potential reputation destroying support problem. So recently I’ve been looking for more and better tools to help manage my use of Twitter. ...

Google is working with a consortium of carriers to become part of an intra-Asian submarine cable system, tentatively called the Southeast Asian Japan Cable (SJC). The cable would be Google’s second play in the sub-sea category. The new cable links various different cities to Chikura, Japan Guam, the landing site of a transpacific cable called Unity. Earlier this year, Google invested in this transpacific cable along with a bunch of other carriers. The Unity cable ...
