For those of you that still haven't gotten around to your own illegal hike up the World Financial Center, you'll be glad to know you can soon get a bird's eye view of the city from the top of that building without risking arrest. Yes, the building that's been through many trials and tribulations will finally be open this Saturday. Apparently, the gallery located on the 100th floor of the skyscraper at a height of ...

Posted by Niniane Wang, Engineering ManagerA while ago, I looked around the social web and wished that it could be less static. Sure, you can leave a comment on a blog or write a text blurb on your social networking profile. But what if you want to express yourself in a more fun way, with 3D graphics and real-time avatar interactions? I started asking this question as a 20% project, and I'm excited to announce ...

another possible game changer i think. embedable 3d worlds on html pages backed by google has a really good chance of catching on for regular internet users and making second life obsolete along the way. Wait until you can embed this stuff into google maps or google earth.

So winning a contest for alphaing the room creation features of this product is what got me the iPhone. I have to say that it's interesting but not that interesting. The main difference in a years worth of work is that now it's not buggy which it was. It still is a resource hog and Windows-only. I'm honestly amazed at how slow it is but it's the first of its kind from Google and Niniane and her team had to create a lot of it from scratch I guess. Hopefully they're green lighted to keep working on it because I do see some potential in it... but it has to cut down the memory/CPU intensiveness.

Michael Erard's Wired story on the ways that Chinglish is mutating into a full-fludged (and widespread) dialect poses some interesting possibilities for the language's future, in which tonal suffixes, borrowed vocabulary words, and streamlined grammar open up rich new expressive possibilities. I've always loved English's baking-soda-like capacity to absorb other languages' best features -- the Yiddish terminal "already" at sentences' end, the fantastic Gaelic-salted Irvine Welsh Scots dialect, the many glorious island formations from the ...

Jacqui Smith, the British Home Secretary has sent a letter reported on by the British Journal of Photographers stating that the practice of harassing photographers who take pictures in public places is legitimate, though there is no law against it. File this under experimental but very cool … There’s a great thread on ITT which describes how to install Android on your tablet. So far it’s pretty simple and straight forward. I had to reboot to get Android to actually launch, but otherwise it’s all there … at least what’s available. Much more to try and will see about installing some apps soon as well.
