Willi Dorner / Lisa Rastl: “bodies in urban spaces” (3)

The Reality of the Human Condition? (2)
on frogblog (7) permalinkI saw this image on fffound! this morning. The name of this photo might as well be "The Sad Reality of Our Existence." Is this the inevitable reaction to an overdesigned world? When media and technology becomes ubiquitous, what can we do to escape sensory overload? I look at this picture and imagine rows and rows of people trying to insulate themselves from their cream-colored airborne surroundings. And somehow I don't think noise-canceling headphones or ...Shared by Christopher (64) Paul Irish (16)Contribute comment

Quality Control (59)
on Last.fm – the Blog (61) permalink[Suggested listening while reading this post: Quality Control – Jurassic 5] Prior to moving to London to join Last.fm I worked on credit card software for a leading international bank. When it comes to dealing with people’s money there isn’t much room for mistakes and buggy code can have major consequences. For these reasons there were a number of processes and systems in place to reduce the likelihood of software errors. Despite what some of ...Shared by Alan (37) alice (20) Andre Charland (27) ash (97) Bill Brown (1) Brett Epps (15) Casey Muller (3) charlesnadeau (144) Che, Dong (33) Cogo (57) Danny Bo'itanni (88) Darren Barefoot (40) Dennis Laumen (38) DG Jones (16) DIAMOND-TIN (86) e r a (3) e.p.c. GoBidet (5)
on Cool Tools (50) permalinkInstead of the previously-reviewed Toto Washlet Toilet, there's another bidet attachment option that is easier to install and use while being cheaper. The GoBidet is an adjustable arm that affixes to your existing toilet and swings into position when needed. I've been using mine for at least six years. We had one in a hotel down in Costa Rica and I liked it so much I found a stateside supplier. I find it much more ...Contribute comment

Why Free Software is hard to use, and how to improve it (50)
on Matthew Paul Thomas (51) permalinkWhen I wrote the first version of this article six years ago, I called it “Why Free Software usability tends to suck”. Certainly, the best Free Software applications and operating systems are more usable now than they were then. But this is largely from slow incremental improvements, and low-level competition between projects and distributors. Daily Life in Belarus (50)
on The Big Picture (697) permalinkBelarus is a country of 10 million citizens in the heart of Europe. Its president, Alexander Lukashenko, has been in power since 1994, and U.S. Presidential candidate John McCain recently described him as a "brutal dictator" and supports continued U.S. sanctions, imposed in reaction to rigged elections in 2006. This September, over 700 international observers will be on hand to monitor new parliamentary elections, and Lukashenko may be trying to warm up to the West. ...Shared by Aditya Wirayudha (6) Albie (17) Alex (56) Alex Dumitru (434) asep komara (0) Benjamin (1501) bodzasfanta (182) Brian Murphy (9) Chetan Thaker (131) chris (5) derek sorg (3) diego (97) downbeat (130) Gabe (18) Gat (60) gorimaru (3) Harold (34) Inthenameofmine (751) Java Cola (5) Jeffrey (24) jenny (351) Johnny [FL] (7) JonMoss-theappleofmyi (208) Jordan (187) Justin (84) kamicollo (4) Kevin (83) Mahdi (18) Mario Garza (5) Mark Shaw (34) Matt Smith (6) mattlopez (14) Mr. BabyMan (555) nervioso (180) nparker13 (446) number one (37) Patrick Moore (1) Paul (33) Paul Irish (16) pr1000 (38) Rick (12) Roger Åberg (27) Sean Victory (38) Shawna Bergen (18) Sparky (48) tixu (21) TJ80 (31) Tom Q (16) Ubqtous (48) William Z. AdMob Launches iPhone Ad Marketplace and Gives $1 Million in Ads to Developers (8)
on ReadWriteWeb (3331) permalinkToday, the mobile advertising marketplace AdMob released a new, global marketplace for iPhone ads. The most interesting aspect of this is that these ads will be specifically tailored to the iPhone and will also be highly interactive. To promote this launch and the new platform, AdMob is giving away a total of $1 million to iPhone developers to promote their applications through AdMob. To start, AdMob has lined up a number of large advertisers, including ...Shared by Apostolos (78) arturo.servin (67) dryan (7) noel (40) Paul Irish (16) Pierce Hickey (13) Seb (10) Vishal (8)Contribute comment

Big Contrarian → Tacky. (25)
on Big Contrarian (17) permalinkTalking about your blog is the social equivalent of talking about your dog. It’s a dull conversation for everyone but you. Yet, an entire industry exists built around nothing more than bloggers, talking about blogging to other bloggers via their blogs. It’s a trade show for people who run trade shows. A instructional video on making instructional videos. Cyclical and cheap, yet undoubtably useful to the right type of consumer. This is about as well-spoken as any criticism I've heard of Apple's closed, vertical hierarchy.I might actually argue that the Microsoft of today, if it were to achieve a monopoly again in anything, would be far more free than a monopoly by Google of all things information and by Apple of all things consumer electronics.

Mamihlapinatapai, a most succinct word. It describes a look shared by (kottke.org) (46)
on kottke.org (589) permalinkMamihlapinatapai, a most succinct word. It describes a look shared by two people with each wishing that the other will initiate something that both desire but which neither one wants to start. This could perhaps be translated more succinctly as "eye-contact implying 'after you...'". A more literal approximation is "ending up mutually at a loss as to what to do about each other". Heartbreaking. I wish we had an English word for that feeling.
