The Chrome download was surprisingly fast (as in, less than 5 seconds). FireFox options import during install didn’t work, but it’s been smooth sailing since then. It’s snappy and so far not buggy. Aesthetics of rendering web pages is good, seems better than FireFox. Quite fast too. I remember thinking the Konqueror guys were crazy for writing yet another HTML renedering engine. That turned into WebKit, and now it’s in Safari, the iPhone, and Chrome. ...

Google Chrome has been public for all of about 30 minutes now. I am very impressed with how fast it downloads and installs, with almost no need for user prompts (except to close your web browser so it can import bookmarks/passwords). It’s fast as fast can be. I can’t get over how fast it is. If you type “about:memory” into the address/search bar you’ll see a memory comparison between Chrome and any other web browsers ...

Google’s undocumented favicon to png convertor (via). Showing the favicon of a domain next to a link is a really nice trick, but it’s slightly tricky to achieve as IE won’t display a .ico file if you link to it from an img element, so you need to convert the images server-side. This undocumented Google API does that for you, meaning it’s much easier to add favicons as a feature to your site.

Comments suggest that it only works when the original icon is served with the correct mime type. application/octet-stream will not work apparently.

Well, that's a question that takes on a whole new meaning with this new release of Gears: we have added a new Geolocation API, which allows you to build applications that can do new and exciting things based on your users' location. You can query Gears for the user's current location using the getCurrentPosition() method or you can ask Gears to notify you every time ...

Et ce, en supplément des 30 jours d'extension déjà offerts le mois dernier pour les mêmes problèmes. Ce qui fait donc 3 mois offerts ...

"Dell, Intel and their partners announced last week new technologies that represent major leaps forward for mobility. One technology involves enabling users to gain instant access to a laptop's e-mail, browser and other basic functionality — ...

Web Design Dashboard est une page extrêmement bien conçue regroupant de manière structurée des liens autour des différentes étapes de la conception d’un site web : design, développement, SEO et marketing, maintenance. Kevin Purdy via Lifehacker shared by 7 people Wired's How-To Wiki details how the bane of many an unlucky car-owner's existence, the ability to start a car without a key, can be mastered and used for good, particularly if you find yourself stuck somewhere without a key or an ignition that just won't cooperate. It starts out with a low-tech screwdriver hack and moves onto the electrical disembowelment of the steering column you've seen in ...

ECMAScript Harmony. John Resig explains the outcome of the recent “Oslo meeting” where proponents of ECMAScript 3.1 (incremental improvements to JS as it exists today) and 4 (massive, sweeping changes including many new programming constructs) harmonised their differences. The combined effort is closer to 3.1 than it is to 4, which I think is the right decision.

Web working web developers know about Firebug - the wonderful HTML/CSS/Javascript investigation and debugging addon for Firefox. But this hasn’t been any help for chasing problems in other browsers, which often have quite inferior facilities for figuring out what’s going on - until now. The release of Firebug Lite offers new hope to those trying to chase rendering and script issues in IE, Safari, and even Opera (though Opera users already have the native Dragonfly ...

It's hot and stormy in Paris at the moment. Consequence? The level of pollution has jumped from "good" to "poor". When this happens, the Paris authorities declare a "free parking day" where all residential parking (that is only the cars that show a resident parking permit) is free all day. This clever measure aims at encouraging people to use public transportation instead of their car. Parking in many locations (outside the very center) will also ...
