Quick 10: 10 Words That Will Help You Win at Scrabble (69)
on mental_floss Blog (1413) permalinkI’m not a champion Scrabble player by any means - I often resort to words like “at” and “it” just to use up a turn. But with this list, hopefully I’ll be a little more creative when using tiny little words. And if all else fails, there’s always “ZQFMGB”… a worm found in New Guinea, according to Calvin of Calvin and Hobbes. 1. Aa. And I don’t mean the acronym for Alcoholics Anonymous, either. Bloomberg News Accidentally Publishes Draft of Steve Jobs's Obituary [Oops] (15)
on Gizmodo (17747) permalinkNote to Bloomberg News employees: when you're in the system updating your draft of Steve Jobs's obituary, do NOT press publish. That, though, is exactly what happened late last night, as sleuthed by our buddies over at Gawker. Now, pre-writing obits for prominent figures such as the Steve, in good health and in bad, is totally S.O.P. in the media—so this should not be viewed as yet another non-statement on Jobs's personal health. But unfortunately, ...Shared by Aaron (120) Arturo (342) Bill (44) Cade (209) charris1980 (165) David (51) docbaily (234) Freddy (15) iomegadrive (47) jon|k (116) mrshl (76) PBMax (14) pt9386 (41) Ricardo (68) Ruben Llibre (91)Contribute comment

Guitar Praise: Guitar Hero Minus the Sex, Drugs and Rock 'n Roll [Christiantech] (11)
on Gizmodo (17747) permalinkWhen you siphon the antiestablishmentism out of rock 'n roll, you get one of two things—Christian rock or The Jonas Brothers. Neither is the most ideal listening situation. Still, we're not ones to judge, so here's just the thing for all of you Christian rockers in the audience. Guitar Praise, the Christian response to Guitar Hero, is coming soon to Mac and PC for $100. Bundled with one wireless guitar, it packs a long list ...Shared by Aaron (91) Caleb (65) Chanse Arrington (99) iomegadrive (47) Jon (99) mrshl (76) Richard (173) Sermed (38) Shannon (42) snod (49) Timothy (32)Explore read five notes

Does CBS News mean it? (3)
on Language Log (220) permalinkAccording to CBS News ("Did Hillary Mean It?", 8/27/2008): In her speech to the Democratic convention Tuesday night, Hillary Clinton urged fellow Democrats to vote for Barack Obama, and she did it in no uncertain terms — verbally. But did her body language match her words? Body language expert and former FBI agent Joe Navarro says he doesn't think so. Navarro, who is the author of several popular books on body language, told the co-anchor ...Contribute comment

Guy Builds Full Lego Boba Fett Costume (18)
on Gizmodo (17747) permalinkOur friend Andrew Becraft at Brothers Brick have spotted the most useless, silly, awkward looking, yet absolutely irresistible Lego job ever: a full Boba Fett costume made out of bricks, including helmet, bracelets, utility belt, armor plates, rocket pack, and his laser rifle with obligatory LED light. The picture gallery leaves no doubt to the amazing dorkiness of Simon, its creator. Simon, we love you. New Firefox extension makes YouTube comments almost bearable (11)
on Download Squad (3817) permalinkFiled under: Text, Utilities, Video To a lot of people, snobbery has negative connotations, but there are some places on the web that could use a bit more of it. The best example? YouTube comments. A lot of the commentary on YouTube videos lacks substance, proper grammar, and semblance of constructive criticism. That's where YouTube Comment Snob comes in. The Wrong Door: If Terry Gilliam Directed Transformers as a TV Variety Show [Robots] (12)
on Gizmodo (17747) permalinkLeave it to the BBC to introduce a show about robots attacking humans and generally making a mess of the landscape that's both funny and tailor-made for the ADHD audience. The Wrong Door is a violent, live-action Robot Chicken prone to the same breezy matter-of-factness that made Terry Gilliam's Python interludes both funny and horrifying. Fallacies About Privacy (3)
on Concurring Opinions (19) permalinkIn today's Wall Street Journal, Gordon Crovitz has an op-ed arguing that we've gotten over privacy: We seem to be following the advice of Scott McNealy, chairman of Sun Microsystems, who in 1999 said, "You have zero privacy anyway. Get over it." And the observation by Oracle CEO Larry Ellison: "The privacy you're concerned about is largely an illusion. All you have to give up is your illusions, not any of your privacy." These comments ...

If You Had The 'Secret' To Winning The Lottery, Would You Patent It? (6)
on Techdirt (2185) permalinkOkay, so this story is bizarre enough by itself, but there's an odd twist at the end. A husband and wife who held four separate winning lottery tickets claims to have figured out a secret formula for winning the lottery. That seems highly unlikely, of course. There is no formula that can predict totally independent numbers. The four winning tickets all used the same numbers, so there's no proof that the couple did anything other ...Contribute comment
