In case you needed more, here's a proof that seems to completely confirm that—as expected—both the MacBook and MacBook Pro will be updated this Tuesday at the Apple MacBook 2008 event in Cupertino, where heads may be rolling after a PDF document referring to the "MacBook/MacBook Pro (Late 2008)" line was accidentally posted today in their support site. The document—now gone from Apple servers—details the full procedure for replacing the display in the new notebooks. ...

Not surprising: Apple's (AAPL) new, cheaper iPhone 3G was the top-selling consumer smartphone in the U.S. this summer, beating out two RIM (RIMM) BlackBerry gadgets and Palm's (PALM) $99 Centro, according to research firm NPD Group. Making this more impressive: NPD is counting sales from June through August, but the iPhone didn't go on sale until July 11 -- almost halfway through that period. NPD says the new iPhone accounted for 24% of phones sold ...

News reports confirm the rumors we heard over the weekend about eBay's layoffs. Details are scant, but our sources say some departments are losing as much as 22 percent of their staffing. Development managers have been told to expect to lose 1,700 "train seats" next year. That's programmer lingo for weeks of developers' time; one train seat is three weeks. Do the math: That means at least 100 programmers are losing their jobs in the ...

UniverseToday has an interesting look at geomagnetic reversal, the process in which the Earth's magnetic poles trade places. The article cites known trends and recent studies to debunk doomsday myths and unsubstantiated claims about the process. One such study is attempting to model the earth's core with a 26-ton ball of molten metal. Another recently found evidence that the Earth has a second, weaker magnetic field. "We do know that this magnetic pole flip-flop has ...

Unbeknownst to most of the world, the late super rich adventurer Steve Fossett had started work on an amazing flying submersible that would one day theoretically touch the stars. More importantly, however, was that the design would have allowed adventurers and scientists alike (and most importantly Fossett himself, of course) to venture into the deadly depths of the Mariana Trench, some 36,000 feet below the ocean's surface. Sadly, the design was put on hold immediately ...

"Baghdad By the Bay" was San Francisco Chronicle columnist Herb Caen's nickname for The City, and the title of his collection of affectionate essays published in 1949. My sister took this nicely-detailed 120 Ektachrome transparency just 5 years later, before the neighborhood Victorians became gentrified and the downtown skyline Manhattanized. Thats what so many want. Right ? I’m certainly not going to lie and say it is not a whole lot better having lots of money. I had a whole lot of fun and loved my life when I was eating mustard and ketchup sandwiches and sleeping on the floor of a 3 bedroom apartment that housed me and 5 buddies. I have a whole lot more fun now. It doesn’t suck to be rich. ...

Mark lives a life most of us would love to have. Of course he didn't explain how HE got rich. He sold Broadcast.com to Yahoo for billions. That requires something far beyond discipline: luck. Some people DO win the lottery! But, I find that following people who always chase money is pretty damn boring. I've been on private jets. I've been in expensive cars that cost more than nearly everything I own. Yawn. What is rich? My friend Teresa Williamson inviting me to an awesome concert. My wife hanging out with me on the couch. A conversation with someone who is changing the world. Money ain't everything. I watched my mom die with a bunch of gold in her basement. She couldn't take it with her. On the other hand, money does open doors easier and gets you into wild experiences, but it's not the only way to have wild experiences. That said, I'm following much of Mark's advice because, well, it's good advice for our times.

According to a leaked email from a PC OEM, Microsoft has officially extended the life of its now-beloved Windows XP, moving the date of planned obsolescence from January 31, 2009 all the way to July 31, 2009. In the wake of its very expensive ad campaign promoting (in a roundabout way) Vista, the move is a bit surprising. Essentially, Microsoft is trying to let users skip Vista completely, moving directly from XP to its forthcoming ...
