Online reputation company Rapleaf has released a new study of 49.3 million people, revealing gender and age data about social network users. On most of the main social networks - including MySpace, Facebook, Bebo, Hi5 - women outnumber men by a considerable amount. On Facebook, the 18-24 age group is largest, with 1,685,029 women in that age group compared to 977,753 men. In MySpace, the same age group dominates, with 7,091,214 women and 5,226,788 men. ...

One of the most common questions I get asked is… How do you get past the blank page and write really great content? When it comes to writing web content most people assume you need to be super technical, follow specific formatting guidelines, and be a natural born writer. This is simply not the case. Anymore, to be an authority on a topic - or to be “read worthy” - you simply need to be ...

Nobody can make money on social network ads. Even Google (which controls a lot of the inventory on MySpace) is having a hard time. How worthless are these ads? Lookery, an ad network for social apps on Facebook and elsewhere, is renewing a promotion, guaranteeing 15 cents per thousand page impressions to app developers who sign up. With two ads per page, that comes to 7.5 cents per thousand ad impressions (CPMs). Back in January, ...

“Cutting to the chase”… Strictly selling hours of your life for dollars is the inverse of a practical and profitable business plan. The word “selling” is very important here because that’s what happens in every business transaction. A product is sold and purchased at an agreed upon price. The corporate exchange of hours for dollars is no different; it just has a different twist. Everyone is the CEO of Their Own Corporation What most people ...

Local search, the act of showing up on page one when surfers type in phrases that hint they are looking for a local business, requires much of the same focus as any type of optimization - only localized. Here’s what I mean. Winning the search game takes 3 things (yes, SEO folks will tell you it’s 300, but focus on these 3 and you will do better than most.) High quality, education based, frequently changing ...

When I first started talking about Permission Marketing ten years ago, marketers asked, "sure, but how does this help us?" A decade later, marketers look at Wikipedia or social media or the long tail or whatever trend is finally hitting them in the face and ask the same question. Here's the essential truth: This is the first mass marketing medium ever that isn't supported by ads. If a newspaper, a radio station or a TV ...

I love this. Our question as a marketer must be "How can we help our potential customers meet their goals."

This is obviously happening to Twitter in a big way right now. New people are getting turned on to Twitter because they think there's something in it for them. "I'm an internet marketer (along with millions of other people) and I can get rich using Twitter. Maybe I'll even write an ebook about how I got rich using Twitter and sell it." Ugh.I'm much more apt to befriend a dad who likes parasailing or a college student studying medicine than I am an "internet marketing guru."

"It's entirely possible it could be used that way, but it doesn't owe you anything. The question to ask isn't, "but how does this help me?" as if you have some sort of say in the matter. You don't get a vote on whether Google succeeds or whether your customers erect spam filters. The question to ask is, "how are people (the people I need to reach, interact with and tell stories to) going to use this new power and how can I help them achieve their goals?""

The video above shows a user interface being bucket tested by Google to select (probably randomly determined) users. Earlier today we showed a screen shot of the interface and a video of the search history, recorded by Adrian Pike, the CTO of startup Tatango. This new video, however, shows the full Google search experience with a very Digg-like interface. Users vote search results up or down - a down vote makes it dissapear with a ...
