Credit card companies successfully nixed a Mythbusters segment exposing RFID's security flaws, according to Arbiter of Truth and Mythbusters co-host, Adam Savage. Texas Instruments comes on along with chief legal counsel for American Express, Visa, Discover, and everybody else... They were way, way outgunned and they absolutely made it really clear to Discovery that they were not going to air this episode talking about how hackable this stuff was, and Discovery backed way down being ...Shared by aliencam (5) alphaxion (13) Anita (21) BilliamJ (9) Bob Lee (16) Christopher (22) CntrySigns (7) Corris (6) Crossbar (36) danbri (23) David Worrell (16) DJ (17) Doug Stewart (28) Erik (46) f.shamsi (11) Fernio (3) iammikeb (18) J (7) Jason Adam Young (6) Jeanne (8) JEP (12) Jerry Heiselman (19) Jim (22) jorn (20) Justin (8) Kuushal (7) Mark (9) Matt Warren (2) Matthew (47) Mazz (54) Nishant (6) Randy (8) Rialtus (6) Sam (23) Simon Phipps (6) SK (6) Superbunker (12) TheFlamingoKing (4) tsangal (21) UJ (36) vraicovi (17) Wolfsbane (5)- Jason Adam Young said: wow, just, wow, and I mean... just wow

45th Known Mersenne Prime Found? (15)

Slashdot (3047) permalink
An anonymous reader writes "The Great Internet Mersenne Prime Search (GIMPS) has apparently discovered a new world-record prime number. A GIMPS client computer reported the number on August 23rd, and verification is currently under way. The verification could take up to two weeks to complete. The last Mersenne prime discovered was over 9.8 million digits long, strongly suggesting that the new value may break the 10 million digit barrier — qualifying for the EFF's $100000 ...Shared by Aaron (10) atermath (1) CtrlBreak (13) Dicky S (26) focoma (12) Javier (7) Jeff (30) Justin Yost (81) Marin Purgar (22) Nikki (67) Rialtus (6) Roshan (9) Sysop (6) Tanath (42) Troy (4)- Rialtus said: Very interesting.

Use Your Bank Accounts Every Three Years Or They Will Go To The State [Your Money] (5)

Consumerist (801) permalink
Each year banks give states $4.7 billion belonging to people who failed to "initiate a transaction or communicate with the financial institution" in the past three years. The money isn't lost forever, but getting it back can be a bureaucratic hassle full of forms and headaches. The average works out to $282 per person. It won't pay for retirement, but it's nothing to sneeze at either. Laws on abandoned property were enacted to protect consumers ...- Matthew said: yeah buzzco.

Say Goodbye To Pandora? [Pandora] (18)

When SoundExchange, the organization that represents many labels and artists, proposed steep new royalty rates for radio webcasters last year, they shortsightedly killed off their own revenue stream. Instead of their proposed rates being cut back as part of a standard negotiation, they were surprised to see the U.S. Copyright Royalty Board reject opposing arguments and adopt SoundExchange's rates fully. Now Pandora, the popular streaming music site, says it's paying over 70% of its revenue ...Shared by Aranyx (5) Brian Megilligan (4) Daniel (8) Dave (1) Gene (3) J. Gee Whiz, It Turns Out That Kinoki Foot Pads Are A Scam [Snake Oil] (9)

The nice folks at NPR have done us all a favor and taken some used Kinoki foot pads to be tested to see if they'd drawn anything out of a guinea pig reporter's body. Guess what? They didn't. Reporter Sarah Varney bought some Kinoki foot pads and wore them to bed. She also subjected her husband to the (alleged) detox treatment.
