Greetings from Baghdad. Before I am became McClatchy’s Pentagon correspondent and honored member of the Nukes and Spooks trifecta, I was our Baghdad bureau chief. I was here at the height of the violence, when we woke up everyday to bombings, when we didn’t bat an eye at 70 bodies in the street, when a good week meant that none of our friends or sources had been killed. It was an exhausting experience; everyday felt ...

One Disqus-enabled website was the recipient of an automated message flooding attack this morning. While malicious, it’s a bit different from what commercial spam is. This attack put some stress on the Disqus service and a number of people may have had issues with accessing Disqus this morning. The entire incident, until all was completely smooth, lasted under 30 minutes. This was an isolated case and we’re implementing ways to address this moving forward. Thanks, ...

I just posted a new application in my projects section called Twitter StreamGraphs. It is an interactive tool to let you create StreamGraphs from the latest tweets containing a given word or from a particular user. A few examples are shown below. The application shows a StreamGraph for the latest 200 tweets which contain the search word. The default search word is 'interesting' but a new one can be typed into the text box at ...

I often see problems in the world and wonder why someone doesn't fix them. Then I realize that I am someone, and that makes me feel bad because it is all my fault. Obviously I can't fix every problem, but I decided to try and fix one in particular. The majority of voters say the ailing economy is the most important problem for the next U.S. president to solve. The PLX Kiwi dashboard computer plugs into your car and provides real-time info on how your driving habits affect gas usage — and how to correct them for maximum fuel efficiency. There are lots of gas saver devices out there that claim to help you increase your car’s fuel economy. Most of them are of questionable effectiveness — to put it mildly — relying on such things as magnets, mini-tornadoes, and fuel tank pills. I’ve ...

Filed under: transportation hacksAutoblog recently posted about the LusoMotors LM23, a track car powered by a Honda CBR1000 that weighs less than 900 pounds. It turned up this excellent round up of motorcycle powered cars by The Kneeslider. The usual Caterham suspects show up, but ...

It's barely wider than the requisite AVR and is laid out so you can reduce the size even further. Don't need the power connector? Just snip it off. Don't need the voltage regulator? That can be removed just as easily. The kit is only $12 and all through-hole components. [youevolve] posted a build guide that ...
