The excellent Radiolab podcast recently featured Zoë Keating, a classiclly-trained cellist who now makes absolutely entrancing loop music in real time using digital samplers. Radio Lab host Jad Abumrad referred to Keating as the "quantum cellist" and her rich, layered, and haunting music has been described as "the perfect music for apocalyptic landscapes." From Radiolab: Zoe Keating is the cellist from our live show, War of the Worlds. She used to play with the band ...

Authorities say 33-year-old Michael Lasiter rushed into the Denny’s restaurant late Friday and started stabbing himself in one arm with a butter knife he grabbed from a table. (via ...

Sarah Palin seems to have been invented by Stephen Colbert - true believer, gun-lover, relentless foe of polar bears, sister with nine kids and no father in the house, caribou killer - but this Stewart clip is a pretty good kick-off to what will be a rich late-night comedy political season:

I know, I know, we're all sick of top-ten lists, and on the face of it a list of the Top Ten Endangered Languages seems... well, odd, but Peter K. Austin is an actual linguist who "has published 11 books on minority and endangered languages, including 12 Australian Aboriginal languages, and holds the Märit Rausing Chair in field linguistics at the School of Oriental and African Studies where he is also director of the Endangered ...
