Amazon confirmed our speculation that they are planning to target colleges and universities with a new version of the Kindle, reports the Seattle PI. Textbooks are a $5.5 billion annual market, and most publishers now offer electronic versions of their textbooks. McGraw-Hill Education, for example, publishes 95% of their books electronically as well as in print. But there is no compelling device to read them on. The new Kindle will likely be a large screen ...

The opportunity to buy digital copies of my textbooks would be fantastic. I wouldn't have to lug around those tomes from class to class anymore. Man, would that be nice.

SO COOL - this should be a great catalyst for amazon, and plays to a bunch of themes that are popular across the political divide. Good on Amazon for bringing this solution to market.

Popular Mechanics has interviewed Zack Anderson, one of the silenced MIT Students who were to give the Anatomy of a Subway Hack talk at DEFCON 16. From Popular Mechanics: Its rare that a hacker convention makes national news, but three MIT students caused a whole lot of controversy when they planned a presentation about security holes in Boston's subway system for DefCon in Las Vegas earlier this month. They were forced to cancel the talk ...

Yesterday we wrote about Enterprise 2.0 from the point of view of the Enterprise, the buyer. The conclusion was that the impact of social media on the Enterprise was very big, addressing the very "nature of the firm". This post looks at Enterprise 2.0 from the point of view of the vendor, specifically startups. This is a 30,000 foot view, but we aim to get past the hype to insights you can use in your ...

I think this is a good list. My advice for startups that want to pitch me business? 1) Understand that just because you don't like MS products my business (an most other enterprises) run on a Microsoft backbone. Integrate with AD for security and run on IIS. 2) Understand my business, and how we are structured. Professional service orgs. are very different than big companies.

Strange Maps (74)

When on a hot summer’s day you buy a carbonated beverage to quench your thirst, how do you order it? Do you ask for a soda, a pop or something else? That question lay at the basis of an article in the Journal of English Linguistics (Soda or Pop?, #24, 1996) and of a map, showing the regional variation in American English of the names given to that type of drink. The article was written ...

One of the ways I purposefully shed my "Southern" is by adopting the word "soda," though I called it Coke since I knew what soda was. NOTE: I adopted "soda" many, many years before I left TN.

I always hated the South for making me ask for a Coke twice.

I grew up in a very 'pop' county on this map, but I always said soda. And I still don't understand calling them all Coke, it took me forever to figure out that was how the word was used in Alabama. Meanwhile, NC is just a basketcase. And I've NEVER heard it called 'dope'.

Kinda old, but still interesting.

Thanks, Zoot! I say 'soda' and was just in an argument with my boyfriend over this. Apparently we're suppose to call it POP here.

This is so accurate...I have always called it "soda" whereas I always thought it strange that my cousins who live in Cincinnati would call it "pop". Weird, wild stuff...

Why have I not seen this map before? Also: soda all the way. Also: I added "Dictionary of American Regional English" to my Amazon Wish List. Someone please buy it for me.

Nathan Bowers pointed me to this five year old Cool Tools entry on the book Art & Fear. Although I am not at all ready to call software development "art" -- perhaps "craft" would be more appropriate, or "engineering" if you're feeling generous -- the parallels between some of the advice offered here and my experience writing software are profound. The ceramics teacher announced on opening day that he was dividing the class into two ...

I've paraphrased what Jeff is saying here. It is really quite profound and extends way beyond software developer or ceramics. It permeates every aspect of our life. Don't know how play the guitar? Are you going to read about it, or pick up a guitar and start practicing? Don't know how to ride a motorcycle? You can read the manual, or take one out for a spin (carefully). You did sell enough stuff? You can study more about the product and the region and the demographics, or you can knock on another door or make another phone call.In general, life is about refinement... about constantly refining who we are and what we do. Someone said to me that you can't steer a parked car. So true... the car must be moving before you can get it going in the right direction.God does the same thing with us. He asks us to make disciples as we go into the world. We may be afraid and feel unprepared, but in the act of doing, He grows us and trains us and we become more able all the time.
