Windows only: Free application Iron is a slightly modified version of the Chromium source of Google Chrome that removes components of Chrome that report your usage habits to Google. In practice, that means it removes your unique user ID, doesn't send user-specific info to Google, skips crash reporting, and doesn't check with Google for updates. Some features—like crash reporting and update checks—are built into most browsers anyway, but if you're already squeamish with the amount ...

Amid the iPhone 3G launch hysteria, we made a pronouncement that, looking back now long after the dust has settled, pretty well nailed it: forget hardware, it's code that counts. Code via the juggernaut that is the App Store, which allowed the iPhone to truly came into its own as a mobile platform. Now, our first official look at T-Mobile's G1, the first Android-capable phone built by HTC, is less than 24 hours away, and ...

The Google Android phone isn't that impressive looking. It isn't from a carrier that is that great (it doesn't work in my house, for instance). But it will be the apps that get me to switch. Here's a great list.

So DSLRs from Canon and Nikon now shoot video. And Red, the upstart digital video camera company, is planning to start making digital still cameras. Red CEO Jim Jannard claims that it’s easier for Red to move from video to still than for Canon and Nikon to move the other way, and he points to this example footage from a Nikon D90 as proof. ★

OpenACircle is a new collaboration tool for teams which includes innovative screen-sharing and video conferencing features for instant collaboration with co-workers. This makes OpenACircle somewhat unique in the web-based project/task management space where most competitors have just designed a lightweight version of SharePoint and offer it up as a service. Instead, OpenACircle acknowledges the fact that distributed teams need better tools for collaboration and real-time interaction than just a simple file repository and meeting workspace. ...

As the whole world becomes caught up in US election season I have been transfixed by McCain’s pick for his VP. What I find the most baffling is that all the talk (and attacks) have been around what are (at least for me) completely irrelevant issues. The internet is running riot with talk about her teenage daughter, about stupid misquotes and other conspiracy rubbish. I can’t believe this is what’s getting the media’s attention. How ...

The long awaited day has finally arrived. Tomorrow will see the scientists at the CERN facility in Switzerland switch on the largest particle accelerator the world has ever seen. The LHC (Large Hadron Collider) will start it’s initiation sequence at about 8:30 (CET). The facility will attempt to unlock some of the fundamentals of particle physics and test some of the most radical theories ever developed by man. Most importantly is the attempt to produce ...

I could read about con men and tricksters all day. "I could sell shit at an anti-scat party," he says, "you have to figure out someone's wants and needs and convince them what you have will fill their emotional void." A con man is essentially a salesman -- a remarkably good one -- who excels at making people feel special and understood. A con man validates the victim's desire to believe he has an edge ...

Totally fascinating. Whenever I watch con-men movie ("Matchstick Men", "Grifters"), I always wonder two things: 1) "are these people real?", and 2) "could I be conned?" (From this article, it would seem that the answers to both are yes.)

The Hidden Radio has no obvious controls...unless you count that the radio *is* the controls...it "has either no user interface...or...is all user interface". The volume is controlled by lifting the lid of the radio (which also reveals the speaker). Tuning is done by twisting the lid. Absurdly clever. (via monoscope) (link)

Last week on the WorkFastTV show, we got a little preview of the kinds of things we’ll see this week at the Office 2.0 Conference as Zoho’s evangelist Raju Vegesna visits us. Zoho has a million users. All gotten without a brand name like Microsoft or Google. How did they get there? What have they done well? Do they have a chance to beat Microsoft’s Office? What is next for them, and the entire “collaborative ...

I once worked with a guy who referred to his older brother as the "white sheep of the family." The older brother was a CEO of a Fortune 500 company while his siblings had no ambitions that extended beyond lunch. That sort of thing makes me wonder about the whole nature versus nurture question. I assume all the kids in this fellow's family had a similar upbringing, but only one had ambition. When I was a ...

In a day and age where mobile developers are caught between a rock and a hard place, it was only a matter of time before a company took the opportunity to create a marketplace that would address the needs of the consumer without sacrificing the will (and livelihood) of the developer. Let’s face it; as a mobile developer, unless you write apps for the iPhone you’re basically looking at Handango if you want exposure. Sure, ...

How's this...they've invented a hypoallergenic cat, which sounds handy. The Ashera is apparently a hybrid cat ...

Starting October 1, Comcast users in the United States will have a 250GB per month data cap on their accounts, and will charge for excess usage. Let me say upfront on a less serious note: You’ve got caps! Welcome to my world, one where I pay a small fortune for my 130GB a month on one of the largest cap plans available in Australia. Most people suffer on less than 15GB. From a user viewpoint, ...
