Google's Android Market: Cathedral Or Bazaar? (56)
on
Ars Technica (1652) permalink
Google has revealed the Android Market, a software distribution channel for deploying third-party Android applications. Unlike conventional Linux package management systems, however, Android Market is a highly centralized system with a single point of failure, and a single point of control. Ars looks at the details revealed so far and wonders if it is a cathedral or a bazaar.Read More...Shared by adam (2) Adam Maldonado (155) Adam McDonald (29) Aelle (45) Alex France (139) Alexander13 (467) Allan Haggett (18) Ananya Walia (769) Andrew Hughes (32) Andrew Schott (73) Arne (10) Avi (709) b (45) badpazzword (20) Ben (9) brad (12) catt avery (4) clementi (18) craig (63) digits12 (716) dobata (366) Doo Sun Chung (9) Doug Adams (128) Eleftherios Kosmas (7) Eli (11) Engin (4) evo (11) Guy (702) Hassan (26) Jamie McGibbon (85) Jason Remnant (15) Javier (7) Jeff Rasmussen (11) Josh Chandler (4) Kate (314) Martin Eberhardt (10) metaeuphoria (20) Michael Mior (62) Narayan (37) Nate (32) nuevecolas (23) pericles (700) Philip Campbell (77) Rich Karpinski (16) Ritu (663) Rob (17) scott anderson (2) SD (12) Sun Tzu (313) Syng Shin (105) time (18) timedalkat (19) Tyson Williams (58) webtime (476) Who Knows? Innovation Isn't Dying In Silicon Valley; It's Just Changing (5)

Apparently Judy Estrin, a well-known Silicon Valley tech entrepreneur and exec, is coming out with a new book warning that the infrastructure needed for innovation in Silicon Valley is going away. The complaint basically appears to be that there's too much emphasis on the short-term, with companies focusing on the quick flip rather than the long haul trends that need to be satisfied to drive real innovation. I can absolutely understand where this is coming ...Contribute comment - Room is full? (1)

If these trends continue, will the browser eventually swallow up or simply replace the desktop? Yes. In fact, it will probably happen very soon. There just isn't any reason to have a desktop outside the browser anymore.Shared by adamkcarson (10) agam panwar (38) Andrew (4) Andrew Long (15) Andru (23) Andy J (13) Aranittara (7) Artem (14) asquared (18) audi (6) avg (0) Bertrand Duperrin (6) Bill HR (8) Brad Jackson (33) Brian (0) brittenhouse (19) btocher (6) Chris Adie (0) Cliff (0) dang (1) Danny (0) Dave (29) David (5) David J (6) deanterry (13) dobata (366) Eduardo (2) Edward Vielmetti (7) Einstweign (2) elstudio (7) Eric Baillargeon (2) Felix Banuchi (7) Geo (17) Goktug (16) guanling (10) hao (8) Harold Green (34) Howard (2) hunikal (21) indigo (11) Jan (17) Jared Hanson (11) Jason L (20) Javed (119) Jeff Siegle (0) jeffry (7) jezarnold (12) John (5) Jonas Bolinder (8) Jordi De Groof (12) Joshua (2) jota esse (7) jussi haverinen (1) Kevin (0) Kevin C. This will be linked to a more "me" concentration on the web, especially linked to two seperate "me's" - Work & personal.. I find with work, that the use of the corporate intranet, an internal Wikipedia and also team sharepoints is becoming more prevalent amongst my colleagues..
- Joshua said: Too many underdeveloped metaphors. Take out the words that don't mean much, and you're not left with nearly as much...though still something very interesting.
- Matt said: A decent, albeit long, article about shifting the desktop into the cloud. Have to say that I found the librarian analogy off-base, but not surprising.
- neal said: Great article about the possible future of desktop computing. Kinda long, though.
- David said: The best description of the future of personal computing that I've read so far.
