If are using Firefox along side Google’s browser, this "Open in Google Chrome" extension might come handy - it lets you open web sites directly in Google Chrome from Firefox itself with a right click or via the Chrome button that’s near the Firefox address bar (optional). Background and Credits You may have noticed some similarity between this "Open in Google Chrome" and the popular "IE View" add-on. Well, they are identical extensions with the ...

I really like presenting and traveling around and meeting people, but I just hate being away from my kids. It's visceral. It's physically painful. I bring them whenever I can, but during this last trip to New Zealand and Australia it wasn't possible and I was away for 8 days. Almost killed me. Since I work from home, when I need to talk to folks in Redmond I use Office Communicator, sometimes ooVoo if we ...

Just when you thought that McDonald’s and Burger King’s burgers were the ultimate in unhealthiness, these things appear to prove you wrong: Yes folks, these are cheeseburgers in which the buns have been replaced by Krispy Kreme donuts. This was apparently served for lunch at Google NYC’s cafeteria to celebrate the birthday of the head of the cafe staff. Now if you’ll excuse me, I think I’ll go empty the content of my stomach. Microsoft has announced that its Office Live Workspace Beta has reached its one millionth user. The service, which serves as both an extension to Office and a direct competitor to Google Docs and startups like Zoho, was announced last winter and opened in public beta last March. When we originally covered Live Workspace, we criticized its underwhelming web-based text editor. Rather than focusing its efforts on improving webtop document editing, which is offered by rival ...

Last October, I blogged about our increased investment in the F# programming language. Functional programming has been an increasingly important trend in programming languages over the recent years. F#, a functional programming language for the .NET platform, combines the strengths of functional programming with the breadth of frameworks and tools available with .NET and Visual Studio. Last week, the F# team released the F# September 2008 CTP. This release marks an important step along the ...

Automated builds are one of the core fundamental musts for software development. However, your build doesn't just have to build the solution and execute your unit tests. For IronEditor, my build also creates two zip files. One zip is the output from the build for archiving purposes, the second is my deployment zip - the zip which actually gets pushed up to CodePlex containing only the files required by the application. In this post, I ...

Make no mistake. The cute comic book and the touchy-feely talk about user experience is little more than a coat of paint on top of a monumental hatred of Microsoft. Chrome, the Webkit-based Google browser that launches tomorrow at Google.com/chrome, will give them a real foothold on the desktop and way more control over how web applications perform. They’ve built their own Javascript engine despite the fact that Webkit already has one. This should make ...

When I read the comic about Google Chrome, I determined that Google isn't trying to compete with Internet Explorer and Firefox. They are trying to compete with Windows. Chrome is the beginning of an online operating system.

Google watchdog Phillip Lessen has scanned and posted a printed comic he says he received in the mail from Google today describing the company's forthcoming open source browser Chrome. The link to Chrome is currently a 404. Long rumored to be in the works, this appears to be the first formal acknowledgment that Google really is working on its own browser - and it looks very cool. Will you drop Firefox and use Chrome instead? ...

Great development - and how interesting is it that we're still competing so heavily over browsers, all these years after microsoft / netscape? As I've said before, it would take something HUGE for me to switch from firefox. But innovations like these are great for competition, and will push the industry forward.

Most people have learned CSS the same way they’ve learned HTML—by viewing source, copying template codes, reading books and articles. While this “bootstrap” method of learning is often the best way to find great techniques, it may not be the best for knowing how to manage, debug, customize and even advance those techniques. What our training hasn’t necessarily provided are the core concepts within CSS. This is why the Core CSS series may contain simple examples ...

Yesterday I gave a Silverlight presentation and CodeCamp Auckland. The presentation was focusing on how to apply dependency injection in Silverlight using Ninject, unit testing and the presentation model pattern. Towards the end I threw in a little HTML-bridge fun, and demonstrated the webcam in Silverlight implementation I did some time back. Rob Fonesca-Ensor had done a great job of introducing TDD, IoC and DI on an earlier presentation, so I could focus on how ...
