Google has been experimenting with displaying additional information for discussion boards in the search results and now the experiments are live. Below the title, Google lists automatically generated data about forum threads: the number of posts, the number of authors and the date of the last post. The additional information helps you decide if the search result is likely to be useful. If a thread has a single post or the last post is very old, ...

It's about two weeks since the competition launched their new version, and of course we've started to see reviews of it. We all read them avidly - after all, we do have our own new version coming up and it's not for nothing we let them put theirs out first! Indeed I did just twirl my moustache in a cunning and rather cavalier manner. Of the reviews we see, the ones that have interested me ...

Filed under: Analysis / Opinion, Hardware, Odds and ends, iPhone Seriously? I have to say: I don't buy it. I really don't believe that you could pull enough power to charge an iPhone out of an inducting yo-yo, but that is apparently exactly what the iYo Yo-Yo claims to be. It's not actually in production yet (or even produced, singular -- there's a demo of a rendered unit running on the site), so I'm as ...

Today we would like to announce that WebKit is the first browser engine to fully pass Acid3. A while back, we posted that we scored 100/100 and matched the reference rendering. Now, thanks to recent speedups in JavaScript, DOM and rendering, we have passed the third condition, smooth animation on reference hardware. Here is a screenshot of a successful run: Here is the timing reference dialog you get by clicking on the “A” in Acid3 ...

You can't get a funnier error message than this:Dear valued user,You have reached the error page for the error page...You win!!Sometimes even the error pages can't be displayed and you need to come up with a plan B. Gmail's meta-error page is simple, yet effective: Google can't always win. This reminds me of a similar error message from Google Reader: "Oops! That wasn't supposed to happen".{ The first screenshot is licensed as Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial by ...

Finally, some good news regarding an app that had been removed from the App Store. The Mac Box’s PhoneSaber was a fun little accelerometer-based lightsaber simulator — fire it up, wave your iPhone around, and it made lightsaber sounds. The developers pulled it from the App Store shortly after release, however, due to licensing concerns. As of today, it’s back, renamed Lightsaber Unleashed, as a free (and apparently licensed) promotion for the new Force Unleashed ...

To the girl who almost slammed into me as she was texting away on her phone while driving last week: regardless of the crazy face you made and the nasty words you mouthed through your windshield, that was your fault. California agrees with me. Just yesterday, California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger signed legislation outlawing the reading or writing of text messages while driving. Starting January 1st, the first violation will set you back 20 bucks, with ...

Filed under: Business, Windows, Macintosh, Office, Productivity, Web services, Freeware Thanks Microsoft. No seriously, thanks. As far as I can tell, the new .docx default document format in MS Word 2007 and 2008 (for Mac) does nothing to make my life easier, but has certainly made it more of a pain. Although my office predominantly uses Office 2003, our users are starting to receive documents saved in the newer .docx format, and are unable to ...

"No man is an island," the old saying goes. The same could be said of software: in an always-online world, even traditional desktop applications can become richer, faster, and easier to use by connecting people to information and to each other, right within the apps themselves. That's one of the things we thought about this week when we launched the Adobe Creative Suite 4, and why it seemed natural to work with Google to help customers ...

It's Tuesday here, so the Reader team is happy to announce bunch of new features: friends worldwide, tagging with note, alphabetical ordering, and even last-crawl-date. Fun! Friends Everywhere Now that our new and improved sharing features are available in the US, we have made sharing with friends available to Reader users in all supported languages. We are dedicating this to our teammate Steve Goldberg, who claims he can speak almost every language in which Reader ...

The problem with many modern-day collaboration applications is that they tend to centre their functionality around their home operating system. Instant messaging clients may let you chat and share files with groups of other users, but what happens if the messaging client that your Windows friends use doesn’t get along with the client your Mac and Linux friends favour? With the explosion of web-based applications popping up these days, it’s no surprise that a solution ...
