With the end of the Olympics in Beijing, all eyes turned for a moment to London, site of the upcoming 2012 Summer Olympics. While looking for good photographs of London, I was contacted by London photographer Jason Hawkes, who had some wonderful images of London, seen from above at night (from a helicopter, to be exact) - some of which which he's agreed to let me share here. The Northwest Passage is about to be ice-free for the second year in the row, as seen on satellite images released today by the European Space Agency. The less direct Amundsen Northwest Passage has already been passable for about a month. Last September scientists were very concerned when the Arctic ice pack shrunk to its smallest size since satellite measurements began almost 30 years ago. This year the ice has already claimed the title of ...Contribute comment -

Usain Bolt Is Freaky Fast, But Nowhere Near Human Limits (63)

As astonishing as Usain Bolt's record-breaking 100-meter sprint was, his time of 9.69 seconds is nowhere near what biostatisticians predict is the natural limit for the human body. But because he broke the mathematical model that had fit 100-meter record data for almost a century, Bolt's incredible performance could reset how fast researchers believe humans ultimately can run.Shared by ~V~ (8) Adrian (33) Angelica (14) Brandon (65) Bryan (24) Carlos Eduardo (13) Crossbar (36) Damien (12) Dan (1) Derick Valadao (15) Digg Boss (641) Dion Rodrigues (35) Doug Walsworth (8) Erik Chillingworth (3) Felix (11) Geoff K (10) Gianluca Neri (1) Herbal Lemon (9) heringermr (16) Jamie McGibbon (85) Jay Bandoy (38) Jeff (7) Jeff Hertlein (11) John Scheeser (0) Jordan (396) Jorge (8) kant (77) Kate (314) Keith B (3) Keith Bradbury (3) Kevin (3) Kevin Federline (235) Kuushal (6) Lasse Rintakumpu (3) laura (24) marcell (25) Michael Mior (62) Mithrill (3) Mr. BabyMan (309) Mr. Matt (13) Nick (18) Nikollas Ordway (67) NMajdan (5) Ozgur Alaz, Marketallica (20) Pedro Markun (17) Philip V. He's enormous," Weyand said. "Typically when you get someone that big, they can't start."That's because muscle speed in animals is generally tied to their size. For example, rodents, being much smaller than elephants, can move their muscles much faster. The same holds true for human beings. Sprinters are short and have more fast-twitch muscle fibers, allowing them to accelerate quickly, but compromising their ability to run longer distances. Four hundred-meter runners, almost always taller, have the reverse composition of muscle fibers.Bolt, though, combines the mechanical advantages of taller men's bodies with the fast-twitch fibers of smaller men.
- Derick Valadao said: One look at that graph and you get the point. Bolt crapped on years of research which held up for decades. This man is incredible.

A Rule of Thumb for Gut Bacteria (1)

Wired Science (76) permalink
When a bacteria has lived in human bellies for tens of thousands of years, it's probably best to assume that it does something worthwhile. The Economist has a story on Heliobacter pylori, a gut-dwelling microbe and longtime Wired Science favorite: nearly annihilated by modern hygiene and drugs, it causes ulcers and certain types of cancer, but may protect against other cancers, asthma and obesity. That in itself isn't new, but the article examines H. pylori's ...Shared by Dan (1)Contribute comment -
