When America was being divvied up, surveyors and cartographers were as accurate as possible drawing the boundaries between these new regions. Unfortunately, mistakes were still made. And minor map mistakes led to years of fighting—sometimes in the courts, and sometimes on the field of battle. 1. The Toledo War: Ohio vs. Michigan The story of The Toledo War actually begins in 1787, when the U.S. government enacted the Northwest Ordinance. The Ordinance described the border ...

Early on the morning of September 1, Roz Savage became the first woman to row, alone, from California to Hawaii. The voyage of 2,600 miles took her 99 days, 8 hours and 55 minutes. During the trip she was in surprisingly regular contact with the outside world, equipped with high-tech gear including a satellite phone, iPod loaded with audiobooks, water-proof speakers, video/still camera, and a solar panel rig to power everything (read more about the ...

One of my favorite thoughts, and I think it came from a movie, is that the reason to get married is to have a witness to your life. It's the sort of idea that might not strike you immediately as brilliant, but over time it unfolds.Another great quote along those same lines - and I wish I knew who said it - goes something like "You're not a writer until a writer tells you you're ...

While reading the Tennessean online, I came across an article about John McCain selecting Alaska governor Sarah Palin as his running mate. The article gives a brief overview of Palin’s political/biographical background, ending with this final sentence: She and her husband Todd Palin, have five children. The latest, a baby, was born with Down syndrome. I find it so comforting to know that Palin’s latest child was a baby, and not, I don’t know, a ...

The only thing better would be an actual 1968 Mustang GT 350 Fastback like ...

We’ve have many posts about treehouses before on Neatorama, but never one this cool. Here’s an extraordinary treehouse in Udaipur, India, built by K.P. Singh. Allan Wu of Honda’s Drive Every Drop interviews the man: The house is supported by a mango tree, and was conceived by Mr. Singh on a bet that he could maintain property value of a certain terrain without the need for chopping its fruit trees. Hit play or go to ...

I don't think this was all that creepy until the last guy used musicians as an allegory for Jews and Nazi dissenters. Everything else just seems like the kind of USO stuff you'd find on U.S. television at the time, just in German and about Germany. Just because something is about Nazis does not automatically make it creepy.
