Cocktail Party Physics: the great pop-sci book project (7)

I recently received an email from a grandmother asking for book recommendations for her gifted granddaughter, who shows considerable talent in math and physics. That request, plus the recent book meme floating about teh Internetz listing some of the great books in Western literature got me thinking about compiling a similar meme thing for popular science books. The emphasis here is on "popular": books that are engaging and accessible to a truly general reader, ideally ...Shared by atul (75) Chris Ing (4) John Dupuis (4) Quinny (36) Scott Hendricskon (1) Tometheus (14) Wilson Afonso (7)- Tometheus said: Sadly I've only read ~15 of them. (Not sure on a couple in which I've read several of the author's works, but can't remember which book is which.) .. of course, there are some that I haven't read the popular work because I've studied the textbook. (i.e. Kip Thorn) Oooh.. just another two that I had read. (strange syntax for E=mc and I forgot all about the Physics of Star Trek book that I read for that honors class on the science of science fiction) Even though the book is a little outdated now, I enjoyed Alice in Quantumland, but I would have put Scrooge's Cryptic Carol on there instead by the same author. Hmm.. just noticed that he also wrote a book I used in grad school as a textbook for Lie Algebras. OK, I've rambled enough.

The Evil Mad Scientist Labs folks have conducted exhaustive investigation into the value of objects relative to their weight, starting with coins and bills and working through commodities like flour, and thence to exotics like human blood and antimatter. This is extremely useful information if you're ever trying to get a lot of valuta through a narrow aperture. People have been saying that the new industrial grade swimsuits like the LZR Racer are worth their ...Shared by Adam (15) Alex (1) Allen (11) Austin (11) autodidactic (35) Chris (6) Chris Ing (4) darkeye11547 (247) Fred (5) Jack Pate (18) Jason (1) Jeffrey (9) Katie (0) Kevin Branigan (7) Linkletter (5) Maarek Stele (59) Mike B (0) Nathan (48) pr1000 (16) Rob (4) Sam (56) searingblue (2) talboito (30) Will (2)- Mike B said: Gold is the only thing worth its weight in gold.

The studies revealed that millions of years ago, penguins, snow seals and koalas ruled the earth. For sustenance, they feasted upon whales, dolphins, and other sea mammals to the point of near extinction. But the Narwhal went into hiding beneath the ice of the North Pole, biding their time, planning their revenge and sharpening their tusks. Finally, they re-emerged, tusks gleaming with newfound magical power, and fought back against the adorable creatures that threatened their ...Contribute comment - Cara Barer Photographer (1)

Men like to compete. Men particularly enjoy comparing and competing against one another in the area of strength. To settle disputes among your friends as to who is the strongest, you could go to the gym, slide some 45 lb plates on a bar, and see who can bench or squat the most. But that simply isn’t as fun as actually struggling and wrestling against an opponent of flesh and blood. Moreover, a gym might ...Shared by Ananya Walia (769) Andrew [j.Mac] (23) ani625 (85) Brett McKay (40) Chad (4) Chris Ing (4) Dimitar D (37) Fredrik Carlsson (20) Ingar (6) Jess (7) Klemo (20) Manuel (2) Michael (20) MikeonTV (66) Mladen (87) Muhammad Saleem (246) nossenigma (9) parkylondon (32) Sam (7) sinclair (30) Thomas (21) Tom (279) Venci (13)- sinclair said: "February 1933 edition of Modern Mechanix Magazine"!! love "foot boxing" and I definitely remember "indian leg wrestling" from some kid activities. most fun was when you could flip the other person up & over - or when you got flipped.

Chad laments that we don’t hear that much about the decathlon any more, because Americans aren’t really competitive. I also think it’s a shame, because any sport in which your score can be a complex number deserves more attention. Yes, it’s true.
