Most excellent reader Ray A. sent this chart in today. I think he caught pretty much every major romantic relationship I’ve ever written into this comic. The characters are a lot less slutty than I’d imagined! I’m going to be making up a big page of image buttons and banners tomorrow. In the meantime, can I get feedback on this shirt design? I kind of need to wear it… I’m thinking about calling it The ...

I started French Maid TV as a vehicle to create new integrated advertising models for online video distribution where products and services appealing to young men would be explained by hot sexy women dressed as French Maids. It continues to be a working business model but I'm tired of being a one trick pony. I'm tired of people not being able to see past the French Maids. I'm tired of being the "French Maid Guy."Sure ...

John August writes: A good response at a festival is gratifying, but it doesn’t translate particularly well to the larger business. … Focus on what’s next. Don’t dwell on what-mighta-beens. The iron was never that hot, and while you’re at square one, you didn’t get sent any further back. You made a movie. Get the most you can out of it, then get cracking on doing the next project. We all need to lie to ...

In the universe of the free ("free" as in beer), getting ripped off is the norm. Yes, many products and services are deliberately priced at zero these days, but a significant portion of consumers will gravitate to illegitimate free versions of not-free stuff. Free versions of pricey digital products are not hard to find on underground file trading sites, or in bits and pieces on above ground aggregators like YouTube. Most high-priced wares like expensive ...

Some people are so wrapped up in being "stolen" from that they don't see it as a windfall of publicity and links. Build a monetized back end, or, as this guy did, fix what bugs people and your income will grow nicely.

My games aren't as good as they could be. Ironically, one of the things that reduces your enthusiasm to really go the extra mile in making games is the thought that thousands of ungrateful gits will swipe the whole thing on day one for nothing. It's very demoralizing. But actually talking to the pirates has revealed a huge group of people who really appreciate genuinely good games. Some of the criticisms of my games hit home. I get the impression that if I make Kudos 2 not just lots better than the original, but hugely, overwhelmingly, massively better, well polished, designed and balanced, that a lot of would-be pirates will actually buy it. I've gone from being demoralized by pirates to actually inspired by them, and I'm working harder than ever before on making my games fun and polished.

For a while now, we've been pointing out that people in both the advertising and content businesses need to recognize that they're both in the same business. All advertising is content, and all content is advertising -- whether intentional or not. The latest example of this is pointed out by reader lavi d, who points us to a clip from NPR's All Things Considered about how Procter & Gamble has teamed up with Def Jam ...

We’ve talked a lot on the podcat about RSS feeds and finding ways to monetize full RSS feeds that encourage readers to avoid hitting your site on a daily basis. Well, interesting news just came to me on that front. My buddy Gary pointed out that Google now offers Adsense for RSS feeds. You have to migrate your feedburner feed over to google manually by sending Google an email. It’s not automated yet. I sent ...

Whenever we talk about business models involving giving away "infinite" goods and charging for "scarce" goods, one of the points that we try to emphasize (though it doesn't always come across) is that some of the best business models are ones where you get paid for the creation of content, rather than copies of existing content. When it comes to music, we've suggested a variety of options, and pointed to stories like Jill Sobule and ...

Think about Internet video four years ago. Can you remember that far back? What did people use to share videos? Really, how much video were you watching in 2004? The answer is: probably not much. Why? Because there really wasn’t anything in terms of online video. YouTube didn’t appear until 2005. uStream.tv and justin.tv were not until 2007. And the rise of Gary Vaynerchuk of Wine Library TV is a very recent phenomenon. In the ...

Hayden Black is nice, funny, quotable and makes two critically acclaimed and modestly popular web shows. He may not have a face for television, but that hasn’t stopped him from becoming the poster boy for a market of online video producers that has a growing crowd of early-stage startups looking to meet its needs. Black, who has never signed an exclusive deal and whose shows — Goodnight Burbank and Abigail’s Teen Diary — are distributed ...

In some ways, personal branding is noise. It’s talking about one’s self instead of talking about something that’s useful to others. But another way you might look at it is that personal branding is leverage: once you know me, you start to build a relationship with me. Once we have a relationship, I can share even more with you. The more we share, the more likely we’ll have other common interests down the road. It’s ...

Daisy writes: Traditional TV still has a bigger audience, bigger money, bigger everything. And like it or not, that’s still what most creators want. So you know what I think web stars and shows should do? Tap into those TV coffers to their advantage. If a network is hot for you, grab that cash and use it to demonstrate to a much wider audience that there is awesome stuff originating online. Sure bigger (theoretical) audiences ...
