We're always thrilled when a simple, manual solution to a problem can surpass the performance of expensive technology. Regular readers know that we often rant on the downsides of complex manufacturing scheduling systems when a simple whiteboard will often suffice. We saw a similar case of simple elegance last month during the Olympics in Beijing.High-tech televisual bells and whistles have carried couch-based Olympic watching way beyond the mere reality of being here. Thousands of cameras ...

Jason Seiden’s new book, “How to Self-Destruct: Making the least of what’s left of your career” easily gives the impression that its contents are edgy, unconventional, and utterly hilarious. The book lives up to its promise as Seiden lends his refreshing, brutally honest voice to the often dreary genre of career guides. Since I tend to see myself as somewhat a non-conformist who questions everything, I thought “How to Self-Destruct” would be a mere affirmation ...

“We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence then, is not an act, but a habit.” - Aristotle If you could just pick one or two (or seven) habits to create in the next few months — habits that will have the most impact on your life — what would they be? I often get asked this question, because people are overwhelmed when it comes to starting positive life changes. They ask me: what one or ...

1. Develop positive thinking. I put this first because I think it’s the keystone habit that will help you form the other important habits. Sure, positive thinking by itself won’t lead to success, but it certainly goes a long way to motivate you to do the other things required.I learned this when I quit smoking — when I allowed myself to think negative thoughts, I would end up failing. But when I learned how to squash negative thoughts and think positive ones instead, I succeeded. This discovery lead to me practicing this over and over, until I was able to form just about any habit I needed. It’s been invaluable to me, and I think it could be to most people.Focus on this habit first, and you’ll have a much easier time with any of the others. Start by becoming more aware of your negative self-talk — do a little tally sheet throughout the day, marking a tally each time you notice a negative thought. Soon you’ll recognize them, and you can squash them.

For English subtitles, choose “Danish” from the “Choose Language…” drop-down. There is a misconception that lifestyle design is just for entrepreneurs or CEOs. In reality, the principles — borrowed from economics and behavioral psychology — can be applied within organizations and groups with even more dramatic effects. Just watch the 25-minute segment above from the Danish equivalent of the BBC (DR1), where lifestyle design is tested by both an employee at insurance giant Codan and ...

Yes Tim. Yes Tim. Yes! This quote:If the processes are wasteful (inefficient), performance will decrease when you attempt to scale. The more people involved, the more severe the decrease. If the processes–including prioritization and workflow optimization–are lean (efficient), performance will increase. Combined with other people following the same lean processes, performance can increase in an exponential vs. linear fashion (For any exponentially growing quantity, the larger the quantity gets, the faster it grows)." says it all. It's tough to remain focused on this "process awareness" in the early stages of business. Doing so reaps benefits later. It's that darned delayed gratification deal !

New technologies tend to follow different trajectories of hype, hope, and despair as they are discovered by different groups of people and finally adopted (or ignored) by consumers. Gartner actually goes ahead and charts this hype cycle for different technologies. Its latest hype cycle for 2008, shown above, is making the rounds. (It was released in July, but is just now reaching the upward trajectory in its own cycle). According to Gartner’s view of the ...

Great graphic. I sometimes fear coming across as either an apologist or a groupie for virtual worlds, but when a technology falls into "trough of disillusionment," it's usually the last opportunity for established players to apply the new technology to create differentiated advantage. It will be very interesting to watch Green IT follow this same curve.

So the questions is - where exactly in the hype cycle is it best to start a company built around a technology? I'd have to argue for the trough of disillusionment so you can lead the enlightenment.
