It is amazing to me that in the several days after it was announced that the second-ever woman was nominated for a major-party vice-president slot, so much of the news has concerned her and her daughter's reproductive activities. Part of the reason to have a female candidate in the first place is presumably to be [...]

Google wants to help you put a name to that face. With a face recognition feature set to launch at noon PDT Tuesday, Google's Picasa Web Albums will help users label their photos with the names of subjects. That and other changes to the photo-sharing site are joined by a new beta version of the accompanying Picasa 3.0 photo-editing software. The "name tag" feature presents users with collections of photos with what it judges to ...

AP - The Milwaukee Brewers want CC Sabathia to be awarded the first retroactive no-hitter in major league history. After Sabathia tossed a 1-hitter on Sunday in which the only hit was an infield single that could have been called an error, the Brewers vowed to send a DVD of the play to Major League Baseball, asking that the call be overturned.

WinPwn 2.5 is finally here! This is a very nice jailbreak application. I just upgraded to iPhone firmware 2.0.2 and jailbroke my iPhone 3G using the QuickPwn part of WinPwn 2.5. You can jailbreak the iPod Touch and both the 1st Gen iPhone and the iPhone 3G all on firmwares 2.0, 2.0.1 and 2.0.2. You can also unlock the 1st Gen iPhone but not the iPhone 3G. Again, I used the QuickPwn part of WinPwn ...

The best way to judge a society is to judge how well it takes care of those unable to take care of themselves — like music and film executives, for example. Motivated by profit and self-interest, they have been unable to stop digital piracy from eroding their relevance and profit margins at home or abroad. Fortunately for them, there's Democratic vice-presidential candidate Joe Biden to the rescue. Reports PaidContent: Biden this year "proposed a $1 ...

SHANGHAI — American Apparel’s ambitions to buck the conventional wisdom of fashion retailing are now poised for export — to China. The retailer is this weekend expected to open its first store on the Mainland, in the World Trade Center in Beijing, after months of delays. American Apparel hopes to open four more stores in the country this year and faces the daunting task of marketing American-made garments to the world’s largest apparel producer.“The bottom ...

Like a lot of other companies in Silicon Valley, TimeBridge has hired their fair share of ex-Yahoo employees. CEO Yori Nelken said most of their ex-Yahoo engineers got a chuckle when they noticed the large Yahoo advertisement on the stadium wall next to the 404 marker (for 404 feet from home plate) during a recent company outing to a baseball game. 404 errors occur when a web page cannot be located on a server. Jack points us to this regularly updated collection of inane, indecipherable or insulting comments from YouTube. When will it get better? Now that everyone has their own channel, their own newspaper, their own station, it's pretty shocking how low the average has sunk. The question is: will it be so noisy and offensive that the rest of us just tune it out completely? Do you care enough to dig through the pond scum comments to ...

One of the reasons why the guitar has become a staple in pop culture is its immediate accessibility. In lieu of standard notation, guitar players have developed tablature - a more intuitive representation of a song that uses numbers to indicate which fret on a guitar each note is played. Even the most inexperienced musicians can usually learn the system in a matter of minutes. One of the problems with tablature is that it does ...

A journalist asked me, Most people have a better standard of living today than Louis XIV did in his day. So why are so many people unhappy? What you have doesn't make you unhappy. What you want does. And want is created by us, the marketers. Marketers trying to grow market share will always work to make their non-customers unhappy. It's interesting to note that marketers trying to maintain market share have a lot of ...

Here’s a fun little addition to the Olympic Cover-Ups of 2008 files: Organizers have actually gone around Beijing and painstakingly covered the brand name on every object not made by an official Olympic sponsor. We’re talking elevators, sink faucets, even soap dispensers and urinals — all taped over so no one will accidentally see their logo and decide to buy one. The International Olympic Committee calls it “brand protection,” according to a report in the ...
