For all its supposed simplicity, Really Simple Syndication or RSS has continued to confuse and intimidate millions of people online years after its introduction. What can be done to make RSS more mainstream? Google plans to roll out a small but simple feature that could go a long way. We wouldn't be surprised to see every blog publishing service follow suit. "Follow this blog" is a clear call to action and those words will soon ...

Thought about it a bit more. Why not replace the RSS icon in address bars with a button that says "follow this page". Joe Average User might be more inclined to click on that than a funny orange square.I think I'm going to replace my in page rss icons with a little chiclet that says "follow my blog."

Hillary Rosen, who does commentary for CNN, told me yesterday that despite the fact that cable news has decided the war between Clinton and Obama supporters is the story of the convention, they're actually having trouble finding delegates who reflect that. From here on the ground, the real story is the unhealthy relationship between Democratic politicians and their bigwig donors, but woe to anyone who wants to look into it: Police in Denver arrested an ...

You might have seen irenicdonna’s message in your travel through the Flickrverse. “I found a camera, 2 months ago, which I handed in to the police. It’s not been claimed so they’ve now given it to me. It’s a nice camera and I certainly don’t mind keeping it but I as the photos include a stag night and then some European travel I thought they might be somebodies honeymoon photos.” With direction from the Help ...

Aza’s Thoughts » Ubiquity In Depth Take a few minutes this week to look at the Ubiquity plugin for Firefox. So far, I’ve spent just enough time with it to have my mind blown by the Quicksilver-like interface it wants to bring to web browsing. Ubiquity for Firefox from Aza Raskin on Vimeo. And, like our favorite OS X launcher, Ubiquity also has an ambitious mission: to move beyond onesie-twosie key shortcuts by using user-extensible ...

Are you stuck in DC, feeling just a little Left Behind by The Rapture in Denver? Too many of your friends partying, protesting, working or just hanging around at the Democratic National Convention? Fear not! Everyone else in town may have been invited into Heaven, but those of us Left Behind can enjoy the world and its pleasures right here at hand, while still viewing the Second Coming of the Democratic Party via razor-sharp television ...

This is a little bit genius. One of the new features of FriendFeed (a Twitter-like thingie) is "fake following". That means you can friend someone but you don't see their updates. That way, it appears that you're paying attention to them when you're really not. Just like everyone does all the time in real life to maintain their sanity. Rex calls it "most important feature in the history of social networks" and I'm inclined to ...

Interesting feature... I don't have any friends I'd want to fake follow, but it's good to know it's there. I haven't been using friendfeed as much recently, anyway.

The Kennedy tribute was touching, but it was Kennedy who was powerful. Walking out to chants of "Teddy, Teddy," Kennedy sounded strong and sharp. He's old now, and sick. He walks slowly and the mane has thinned. But he's still got that voice, that rumbling bass -- as Harold said to me this morning, "the last voice in American politics." The words, as they've always been, were clear, and the message was simple. Broadly, it ...

So long as I'm doing late night VP posts, here's a prediction for McCain: Despite the rumors, it's not Mitt Romney. No way, no how. Romney doesn't bring a state, a narrative, a constituency, or at this point in the cycle with McCain taking public funding. much money. Worse, McCain is getting torn apart on his wealth. Picking the only guy wealthier than he is would be unthinkable. The ticket would have a combined net ...

Do people really say “frickin’”? I’ve always been a believer in the view that one should either curse, or else one should not curse. These gosh darn stand-in profanity terms are just silly. Battlestar Galactica gets a pass on “frack” because (a) their use is clever and (b) it’s clear that in the fiction “frack” is a full-bore profanity and not a substitute.

A judge's ruling today is a major victory for free speech and fair use on the Internet, and will help protect everyone who creates content for the Web. In Lenz v. Universal (aka the "dancing baby" case), Judge Jeremy Fogel held that content owners must consider fair use before sending takedown notices under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act ("DMCA"). Universal Music Corporation ("Universal") had sent a takedown notice targeting a 29-second home movie of a ...

Lately, I’ve become a big fan of the simple online mixtape creation tool Muxtape. I’ve always loved creating mixtapes for friends and this tool was the best solution out there; recently, it became so popular that several tools like Muxtape Stumbler have been built around it. Unfortunately, I doubt we’ll be having much more fun with Muxtape in the future, as the site now sports only the following message: Muxtape will be unavailable for a ...

For as long as there has been reporters or journalists, there have been those anonymous sources who have helped them break more than a few stories. In most cases, these fountains of information have preferred to remain anonymous and out of the spotlight, but it is safe to say that without those sources a journalist’s job would be a lot harder. This was of course long before social media came along and provided everyone an ...
