A conversation with Beth Jefferson about reinventing the library catalog (1)

Jon Udell (87) permalink
This week’s ITConversations show features Beth Jefferson, founder of BiblioCommons, a company that aims to reinvent and federate the online catalogs of public libraries. She’s thinking very creatively about the social forces that such a federation could marshall. The idea is not to create yet another social network. Instead, she wants to promote the social discovery — and social cataloging — of books, CDs, videos, and other kinds of library resources. Social networks pivot on ...Shared by onlythoughtworks (26)Contribute comment - Hosted lifebits « Jon Udell (1)

September 4th 2008 marked Google’s tenth birthday. That means that during 2000 and 2001, when all the air was being let out of the dot-com bubble, Google was in its infancy. That was a good idea that survived the bleakest time for high tech companies. On the flip side, Facebook has not even reached its fifth birthday, but as a company it is worth well more than four billion dollars. Google’s Gears: Not Just For Offline Accessibility (128)

There’s a common misconception that Google’s “next-gen” web platform called Gears only (or even primarily) enables offline capabilities for web applications. The truth of the matter is that Google’s ambitions are far greater, and the browser extension’s capabilities are more multifarious, than this reputation suggests. Gears has been available for over a year now, with the first version released not too far back in May 2007.
