There's a reason there's still so much paper around in this hyper-connected, everything-online age: the stuff is cheap, portable, compatible with all your applications, and everyone masters the interface by the time they're out of the first grade. Ingenious hackers and productivity thinkers, however, have taken paper to the next level in a huge variety of ways, creating templates for pocket organizers, super-handy calendars, thoughtful gifts, and even makeshift tools. Bletchley Park, the "home of the codebreakers" -- where Alan Turing and co cracked the Nazi Enigma machine -- sells "Pocket Enigma Machines" made from a clever cardboard disc inserted into a CD jewel case. It comes with a very good booklet explaining the basics of ciphering and deciphering with Enigma, and with a bunch of fun Enigma-related activities. Proceeds go to the nonprofit that runs the excellent Bletchley Park museum. The instructions supplied explain ...Shared by Adamo (25) Andrew (27) Army of Gnomes (14) deusdiabolus (58) Fidel (3) Frank (2) gnusic (66) iAdramelk (0) jamie Wallingford (0) John (16) Josh (1) Larry (9) Martin Gerken (5) Morbuto (9) Noah (22) Pedro (5) rszaloki (17) Simon (4) Tuneguru (6) vim (72) Will (1)Contribute comment -

If you ever doubted, even for a second, that non-Newtonian goo (e.g., cornstarch and water) is from a totally different (and infinitely preferable) universe, behold! Cornstarch paste + subwoofer == proof positive. Algorithm Ink and ContextFree.js - generative art with Javascript (2)

Currently Firefox, Safari and Opera have reasonable support for the Canvas HTML element. With IE the only major remaining laggard, there are a lot of people starting to experiment with Javascript's new graphical capabilities. I mentioned John Resig's Processing.js library in May, and now Aza Raskin has released the ContextFree.js library, which brings another generative drawing language to web-standards software development. Besides being pretty, why is ContextFree.js interesting? Because it shows the power of Open ...Shared by Fidel (3) Marius (0)Contribute comment -

We’re seeing more and more unique ideas for reimagining DJing and the two-turntable setup. Here are two examples from opposite ends of the spectrum: one employs a non-traditional interface to do traditional DJing in a new way, while the other uses the traditional interface to produce new DJ techniques. To me, the latter is more interesting, but both are meaningful parts of the process. From the excellent PSFK, Dan Gould finds a project by Scott ...Shared by Fidel (3) Jeremy (15)Contribute comment -

Circle from Future Audio Workshop is an upcoming virtual instrument that’s gotten our attention in a big way. In terms of sound, its capabilities are familiar, if very complete. What’s different is its approach to interface design and usability, refocusing on “Flow” and ease-of-use while looking forward to new interface capabilities in touchscreens, multi-touch, and OpenSoundControl. What makes that doubly interesting is that Circle appears to embody a trend in a new generation of music ...Shared by Fidel (3)Contribute comment -
