- lishevita said: This is fantastic. I grew up in San Francisco, and Fleet Week is a highlight of the year. I love it when the Blue Angels do their acrobatics over top of the city. It's fun to ditch class, head to a roof, and watch them. But, Fleet Week was never like this when I was growing up...

Using Photographs to Enhance Videos of a Static Scene on Vimeo (27)
permalinkThe work presents a system for automatically producing a wide variety of video enhancements and visual effects. Unlike traditional visual effects software (e.g., After Effects, Shake, Boujou, etc), the system is completely automatic and no manual labor is required from the user. The major limitation of the work is that it can currently handle only videos of static scenes (i.e., videos shot with a moving camera but containing no moving objects in the scene). huge and important news: free licenses upheld (52)
on Lessig Blog (405) permalinkSo for non-lawgeeks, this won't seem important. But trust me, this is huge. I am very proud to report today that the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit (THE "IP" court in the US) has upheld a free (ok, they call them "open source") copyright license, explicitly pointing to the work of Creative Commons and others. (The specific license at issue was the Artistic License.) This is a very important victory, and I am ...Shared by Andy (25) Andy Kaplan-Myrth (36) Blaise (132) C.K. Gearheads don't get it (64)
on Signal vs. Noise (3811) permalinkYears ago I read a book about guitar effects pedals. Something the author wrote in the intro stuck with me: “Tone is in your fingers.” He went on to explain: You can buy the same guitar, effects pedals, and amplifier that Eddie Van Halen uses. But when you play that rig, it’s still going to sound like you. Likewise, Eddie could plug into a crappy Strat/Pignose setup at a pawn shop and you’d still be ...Shared by adang001 (73) AScott (8) Benjamin R (34) Bud Hunt (55) Cade (209) Caleb Elston (107) Cem (28) Chris (46) Chris R. Thought Crimes (9)
on defective yeti (125) permalinkLast night, around 11:15 PM, I suddenly realized that I needed something for work the following day. So I hopped in my car and zipped to the local grocery store, a mile away. On the way home, I was pulled over for speeding. "Do you know how fast you were going?" the cop asked after approaching my window. I did, because I had glanced at the speedometer the moment he'd appeared in my rear-view mirror. ...Shared by ArtLung (35) Dave Arter (47) Erik J. WHAT’S YOURS (1)
on Mighty Girl (28) permalinkPoem from the May 12 New Yorker: One Can Miss Mountains and pine. One can dismiss a whisper’s revelations and go on as before as if everything were perfectly fine. One does. One loses wonder among stores of things. One can even miss the basso boom of the ocean’s rumpus room and its rhythm. A man can leave this earth and take nothing –not even longing–along with him. –Todd BossShared by John (32)Contribute comment
