The Senz aerodynamic umbrella turns itself to the best position in the wind and won a red dot award for its novel design. Even the shaft was rethought and redesigned (it’s oval, not cylindrical or square). I love reinventions of every day objects that are long taken for granted. And not that an umbrella matters in a hurricane, but…

Awesome, like having a stealth bomber flying right above your head! These would sell like hotcakes in Japanese during typhoon season, where you get strong winds and rain together. Litter is not nearly as common in Tokyo as it is in other big cities, but the line of broken umbrellas lining the road during typhoon season demonstrates the potential for this product.

Amazing. Will be the first umbrella I have ever purchased. Also, looks like a great gift for that person that has everything and appreciates great design.

Just a quick post to mention a silly (or is it?) experiment that Google has released to the public: Mail Goggles. This feature is designed to prevent you from sending stupid e-mails in the small hours, when you're most likely to be inebriated and at risk of making a complete idiot of yourself. Don't drink and e-mail. When enabled, Mail Goggles kicks in at the time you specify (default is between 10 p.m. and 4 ...

haha. best iphone app idea ever! except you can't run apps in the background on iPhone. teh lame! see Google Reader needs Reader Goggles too! So I don't add stupid notes to my shared feed around 4 AM. On a serious note, the next feature I'd add would be ability to select specific people on your contact list. Some people you can send any drunk emails any time and it's okay and some people you shouldn't send any emails at any time of the day. (who does drunk emailing anyway? drunk dialing I've heard of and I have witnessed.)

If you’re a Google Docs user, you may have noticed that Google Spreadsheets’ menu has been a little inconsistent with the rest of the Docs suite. Now, Google decided to reorganize the interface a bit and give it a real menu. The menu now gives you the pretty standard “File, Edit, Format, Insert, Tools, Form, Help,” options which is the basic menu we’ve all grown accustomed to in pretty much all Office suites. The items ...

Thats what so many want. Right ? I’m certainly not going to lie and say it is not a whole lot better having lots of money. I had a whole lot of fun and loved my life when I was eating mustard and ketchup sandwiches and sleeping on the floor of a 3 bedroom apartment that housed me and 5 buddies. I have a whole lot more fun now. It doesn’t suck to be rich. ...

Mark lives a life most of us would love to have. Of course he didn't explain how HE got rich. He sold Broadcast.com to Yahoo for billions. That requires something far beyond discipline: luck. Some people DO win the lottery! But, I find that following people who always chase money is pretty damn boring. I've been on private jets. I've been in expensive cars that cost more than nearly everything I own. Yawn. What is rich? My friend Teresa Williamson inviting me to an awesome concert. My wife hanging out with me on the couch. A conversation with someone who is changing the world. Money ain't everything. I watched my mom die with a bunch of gold in her basement. She couldn't take it with her. On the other hand, money does open doors easier and gets you into wild experiences, but it's not the only way to have wild experiences. That said, I'm following much of Mark's advice because, well, it's good advice for our times.

Love this:"Save your money. Save as much money as you possibly can. Every penny you can. Instead of coffee, drink water. Instead of going to McDonalds, eat Mac and Cheese. Cut up your credit cards. If you use a credit card, you dont want to be rich. The first step to getting rich, requires discipline."

While the majority of this is good advice the CD part is hardly reality. More money than you had 6 months back? ( yeah only if he means by saving it without immediate access) as far as $1000 saved 6 months ago being worth more than an inflation adjusted $ today. I don't think so.

That new Sony Reader looks pretty sweet, but there's an unexpected ebook reader that is far bigger. That ebook reader has even surpassed the much ballyhooed Amazon Kindle, another dedicated ebook reader with a much larger distribution than the Sony. What is the device that has achieved a bigger status than the Sony or Amazon devices? The iPhone, of course. Now before you issue a big raspberry over that news I will jump in and ...

A fascinating multimedia article discussing the techniques used to create the HUD user interface in the blockbuster movie Iron Man. Kent Seki lets us peek behind the scenes to understand how ui designers can benefit from the visual design techniques used in this movie.

It'd be so cool to get to work on the UI design for Iron Man. Kent Seki, I want your job! When we were watching the movie Iron Man, I was fascinated by the interfaces (the suit builder, the flight controller and the mega wire tapping screens that Morgan Freeman was controlling) and interaction Iron Man has with "the system" (voice, visual and gestures). That was what I and a friend (who's also very into graphic design but working as a software engineer) talked about walking out of the theater cause it was so amazing, it's stuck in your head. and of course, we were making fun of everything they got wrong about MIT and how surprisingly impressive that they got the brass rat right and how subtle it was.'

We would never sugarcoat someone else's layoffs. Why ours? Gawker Media, our publisher, has told me to cut Valleywag's costs, in anticipation of an advertising recession. In response, I have laid off associate editors Nicholas Carlson and Jackson West and reporter Melissa Gira Grant.
