I just finished reading The War of Art by Steven Pressfield. I thought I would share a quote: These are serious fears. But they’re not the real fear. Not the Master Fear, the Mother of all Fears that’s so close to us that even when we verbalize it we don’t believe it. Fear That We Will Succeed. That we can access the powers we secretly know we possess. That we can become the person we ...

As you are no doubt aware, the dueling show your start-up things are happening pretty much as I type this (from 36,000ft). I'm not going to dive into the debate on what show is better or who needs to die rather I'd like to offer up a perspective that was born from a particularly smart entrepreneur. I got the following email just prior to packing up for the airport: Rick, I didn't make the cut ...

[“what is this?”] Here’s something I wrote last week for this site’s new “About” page: 43 Folders is Merlin Mann’s website about finding the time and attention to do your best creative work. Call it a motto, or a charter, or — if you have to — a “mission statement.” But, for both of us, it’s a stake in the ground that keeps me focused on what I feel best suited to do for you ...

If Merlin Mann follows through with this stated change of direction for his site then I'm thrilled. A web site "about finding the time and attention to do your best creative work" is exactly what I'm interested in right now.

I really like where it looks like Merlin is taking 43 Folders: "A notebook is basically the creative equivalent of the NFL jersey you picked up at Macy’s; unless you fill it with a lot of hard work and sacrifices, you’re just a dilettante with poor spending patterns. An aspiring something. A fan of the game. An existential cosplayer. And, that’s not what I want to help you to be. Even if you really love Moleskines or the Raiders, God love ‘em."

A hero ventures forth from the world of common day into a region of supernatural wonder: fabulous forces are there encountered and a decisive victory is won: the hero comes back from this mysterious adventure with the power to bestow boons on his fellow man. --Joseph Campbell The profound influence of the Monomyth, the Hero's Journey, on narrative video games is easily demonstrated. When my students first encounter Joseph Campbell's The Hero with a Thousand ...

Never let it be said I would ask my girlfriend to do something I wouldn’t do myself. There we were, on the corner of Bumpkin & Vine, in Seattle. In town for the annual 3-day Bumbershoot Festival of art, music, comedy and beer garden lines, we—well, I—decided some personal grooming was just the thing we needed to do to celebrate the Labour Day long weekend. So, on Sunday, a mere two days ago, I charged ...

Last week we published an article about upcoming iPhone gaming controllers. Specifically, we recapped the iControlPad project, but also published a diagram (see right) of what appeared to be another gaming controller for the iPhone that was in development. The original image had been submitted anonymously and simply claimed that testing would begin in October. Some commenters from the original discussion were concerned that these controller pads would be relegated to jailbroken iPhones only due ...

Have you ever felt your co-workers are gossiping behind your back? I mean, I really have to wonder about what kind of image I have at work. Today saw the launch of Toronto’s first scramble intersection, at the corner of Yonge and Dundas. I think of these as Tokyo-style intersections, where traffic is stopped in all four directions and pedestrians can cross in any direction, including diagonally: Flanked by the Eaton Centre and Yonge-Dundas Square, the intersection is used by about 100,000 pedestrians a day and is the site of Toronto’s first trial run for the scramble concept, meant to make crossing ...
