What's so ironic is that if Microsoft started thinking about the user again, instead of thinking about protecting their business, they could do great things. There are many problems yet to be solved in online software, but they won't be solved without bold leaps into the future.

Ian Lamont writes "It was on September 7, 1998 that Larry Page and Sergey Brin founded Google Inc., aiming to provide a better search engine. You can see what it looked like here. Google had a relatively good search engine technology that succeeded in burying many late 1990s competitors, and it eventually developed a successful advertising model and pledged to "do no evil." The company now has nearly 20,000 employees and a $150 billion market ...

By way of David Stephenson I’ve learned that the World Bank now offers an API for several of its data sets on development, governance, and business conditions, plus a collection of photos. Here are the indicators you can explore, for many countries, going back to about 1960 (though the data are sparse in some cases): Agricultural land (% of land area) Forest area (% of land area) Surface area (sq. km) Foreign direct investment, net ...

I have read a lot of stories about organizations over years, especially about the success or failure of innovative organizations, but The Pixar Touch is one of the very best. I've been quite interested in Pixar since Huggy Rao and I did an interview of Brad Bird for the McKinsey Quarterly, but I learned a lot from this book I didn't know. The story itself is stunning; I had not realized that the start of ...

An anonymous reader sends along a PCWorld recap of a new study by the 451 Group, which claims that business use of 'community' Linux distributions is on the rise — distros like Ubuntu, CentOS, and Debian, as opposed to "corporate" packages like RHEL and Suse. The trend is most evident in Europe. The article points out examples in Sweden and Germany, and cites growing in-house expertise with Linux as one factor helping enterprises get comfortable ...

Anti-Globalism points out an analysis of India's CAPTCHA-solving industry posted at ZDNet. It begins: "No CAPTCHA can survive a human that's receiving financial incentives for solving it, and with an army of low-waged human CAPTCHA solvers officially in the business of data processing while earning a mere $2 for solving a thousand CAPTCHAs, I'm already starting to see evidence of consolidation between India's major CAPTCHA solving companies. The consolidation, logically leading to increased bargaining power, ...

With transportation costs up, one of the oldest icons of the Industrial Age is once again coming to prominence. Trains are the object of interest in the United States at levels not seen for decades, with some of the most foresightful investors around — including the world’s richest man, Warren Buffet — placing billions of dollars on old-line companies like Union Pacific and Norfolk Southern. The reason behind the trend is fairly obvious. Most investors have ...
