Make No-Knead Bread Faster and Healthier [Food Hacks] (18)
on
Lifehacker (12735) permalink
Nearly two years ago, food author Mark Bittman launched an army of first-time bread makers with his no-knead, super-simple bread recipe (including a few of our helpful commenters). Now Bittman has tweaked the recipe to reduce the leave-it-alone time from 14 hours down to about four, while also allowing for a healthier, whole-grain variation. Actually, the recipe can be tweaked almost any way you want, as long as it's made in a standard loaf pan ...Shared by Adam (61) Army of Gnomes (78) Brian (25) Brian (20) Dan (16) Jason (27) jayce (132) Kwasi (80) Laci (16) Len Currie (12) Library (20) Matrixx333 (20) murlidhar (15) Neil (3) Pat (20) Steve (52) Steve M. Barack Obama's $3 Million Overhead Projector (49)
on
Gizmodo (6936) permalink
During the last Presidential debate, John McCain delivered this line about his opponent with withering contempt: [Obama] voted for nearly a billion dollars in pork barrel earmark projects, including, by the way, $3 million for an overhead projector at a planetarium in Chicago, Illinois. I'm already tired of hearing these guys talk, but that caught my ear. A $3 million dollar projector? What does that even look like? Three million dollars small potatoes and education, especially science education, should be one of the FIRST things we're spending tax dollars on.
- cbsmith said: Two thoughts:1) It seems likely to me that $3 million for a top quality planetarium projector is a great deal.2) Why have it earmarked just for Chicago? Why not have a fund for planetariums, rather than just one specific one, which is selected by means of politics rather than some kind of objective criteria? That's the trouble I have in earmarks: not that what the money is spent on wasteful things (which happens, but far less often than people think), but that the criteria for where and on whom it is spent is highly arbitrary and inevitably NOT in the nation's best interests.
- lance said: This is an awesome "overhead projector" wish we had these things in high school and college...oh wait, there is one at the planetarium, but I don't think it was as fancy as this!

This mixed media sculpture by Missouri-born artist Kris Kuski reminds me of a story idea that has floated around in the back of my head ever since I first saw the Cathedral of Notre Dame and envisioned its flying buttresses ripping themselves bio-mechanically from the ground, freeing itself and rampaging through Paris as a monstrous medieval arachno-mecha. The WoodStation isn't your standard LED clock/weather station. It's your standard LED clock/weather station that's made of wood. Through a seamless block of lumber design, the inert WoodStation is motion activated to display glowing information pseudo-magically. In reality, a series of LEDs are hidden beneath a thin wooden facade. These LEDs are bright enough to not only shine through the wood when activated, but maintain fine visibility in direct sunlight.
