Amazon tonight launched the finished version of Amazon Video on Demand, the streaming version of its online video service. The official launch moves beyond the beta stage and lets any Mac or Windows PC purchase, rent and watch movies and TV shows directly from the browser, bypassing the Windows-only nature of the company's Unbox software. It also delivers a beta version of a promised link to Son...

Filed under: Laptops It looks like HP is doing its part for the environment and, possibly, thieves with its new Pavilion dv6929wm laptop, which does away with the usual excessive packaging and will instead be sold simply in a specially designed "HP Protect" messenger bag. That idea actually came about through a Walmart initiative that asked companies to produce a product that would reduce environmental impact, which HP won, and has now resulted in the ...

This political season you can’t avoid the candidates’ call for change and reform.Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama rode the wave through the primaries to upset Hillary Clinton and presumptive Republican candidate John McCain cut his teeth on being the maverick reformer.I have long ago learned that I’m never going to talk anyone into changing political parties and surely no one is going to change me, either. That’s not the point and this is not a ...

Nick O'Neill / All Facebook: Facebook Live Feed Kills Twitter & FriendFeed — Yes, I love calling Facebook the Twitter and FriendFeed killer but I seriously think they may have one-upped the competition on their latest release: the Live Feed. You can sit and watch in real-time what is taking place with your friends across their profiles in an unfiltered manner.

I actually think there's room for both in the digilife - friendfeed is an information service that's name sort of belies its purpose. My friends and I keep in touch largely though facebook, but I use friendfeed to track the streams of people with whom I may never have a personal relationship, but who's intellectual and experiential information I still find compelling. It's entirely possible that people older than myself will find friendfeed's innate simplicity and lack of clutter appealing - facebook can be a bit much if you're not into everything it offers. Either way, the competition between feed providers, just as with browsers and other applications, benefits us as users. I'm all for it.

I completely agree. The live feed is awesome. The only reason I will continue to use Twitter/FriendFeed is for the interesting community.

Nova Design's Tatung VOIP phone has bluetooth, "wireless," a neat flat keypad and nothing else whatsoever. Moreover, it is a real thing, allegedly, albeit just a prototype. Isn't it about time we had some sexy wireless Skypephones? Of course, Nova is another industrial designer with a terrible, inaccessible, unlinkable flash site! To read more, just hit Yanko. Late last year, we introduced our newest tool for YouTube's content identification and management system, Video ID. While we have long provided copyright owners with similar content policies and tools, Video ID was revolutionary because it provided real choice and control to content owners by combining a sophisticated policy engine with cutting-edge video matching technology. With the other tools in our content ID system, Video ID helps content owners decide exactly what they want done ...

I can't really put my finger on it, but I love this idea, especially where it seems to encourage content providers to keep content online to advertise and/or profit rather than stifle it. Seems like a win-win from what I can tell for many cases.

Filed under: Gaming Immersion, the company that owns virtually every vibration and haptic tech on earth, is getting a taste of its own medicine now that it owes Microsoft $21 million. You may remember back in 2003 when Microsoft floated an unknown sum of cash in the direction of Immersion in order to include patented vibration technology in its Xbox 360 controllers. Around the same time, Sony told us all that we don't need no ...
