Technorati continues to redefine itself under CEO Richard Jalichandra, who joined the company in October 2007. In June they launched Technorati Media, a blog advertising network. Today they are announcing the acquisition of Blogcritics, a six year old blog network that we first wrote about in 2005. The price, which was all cash, is not being disclosed but our guess is that it is in the $1 million range. Blogcritics is similar to Salon’s newly ...

John McCain attended the D'Backs game on Sunday. Southsider Barack Obama takes a playful jab at Cubs fans on tonight's SportsCenter. It's enough to get you wondering: What kind of role is baseball going to play in this fall's election? More importantly, will the chances of either be hurt if their teams take a swan dive and miss the playoffs? Will they be helped by a World Series run?If you think I'm being a little ...

As the Democrats and Republicans gather at their national conventions, it is time to really think about a comprehensive national technology policy for the Internet Age. Many laws and policies governing the Internet and digital property are inadequate attempts to transplant rules from a different era. The problems that arise are not just about Net Neutrality (see Comcast) or copyright infringement or digital privacy. They are about all of these things. What we need is ...

Charming in its naivety. Have they not noticed that the real world bill of rights has minimally protected us from the intrusions of the state when it relates to our person let alone our belongings.. while it's nice to point out where the state and your possessions collide it's really a symptom that more paperwork wont solve.

This is the age-old question. Is it necessary to create new laws as new technology evolves, or can we still apply old laws to the new technology? Thus far we've been okay adapting the old laws - how long will that last?

True story: Before this January, I had never played a game of beer pong. Then came a weekend trip to ice fish in Wisconsin and since the northern weren't biting, there was little else to do but play the grown-up version of Bozo Buckets.Long story short, I ended up winning the beer pong title for a small Wisconsin town and was immediately named mayor, judge and postmaster at the same time. Giacomo Bassi, Via Flickr (CC license) After the funeral, life moves on. Last week news industry consultant Vin Crosbie published part 1 of a thoughtful, pointed essay: Transforming American Newspapers. (UPDATE: Part 2 is now available, too.) This is must-read material. Here's Crosbie's stunning prediction, with which I agree: "More than half of the 1,439 daily newspapers in the U.S. won't exist in print, e-paper, or Web formats by the end of next decade. Last night, I made my first trip to Altoona since 1999. It was then that, as a wide-eyed 15-year-old child, I watched in awe as Adam Hyzdu launched yet another home run to left. This was my first glimpse of most of the Curve players, and there were a few that I was very interested to see. Obviously, Jose Tabata is the prospect to watch at an Altoona game. He looked very much like a ...

I love books. They’re second to music in importance so far as media in my life is concerned. But I like the physical variety. Ebooks don’t appeal, and I’ll tolerate an audiobook now and again only when I’m on the go. Yet, when I read earlier this year that Amazon was rumored to be developing a new Amazon Kindle device tailored specifically for textbooks, according to Andrea James of the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, I thought that ...

I disagree with this. I think that the market for ebook versions of textbooks is there. It could save money over buying paper books over four years of college. If Amazon can improve the annotation and page numbering features in this version (real page numbers will be essential) then I think they will have a real winner on their hands. Even if they just grab a small slice of the textbook market it should turn out to be a good deal for them. (IMHO)

Amazon confirmed our speculation that they are planning to target colleges and universities with a new version of the Kindle, reports the Seattle PI. Textbooks are a $5.5 billion annual market, and most publishers now offer electronic versions of their textbooks. McGraw-Hill Education, for example, publishes 95% of their books electronically as well as in print. But there is no compelling device to read them on. The new Kindle will likely be a large screen ...

Jerry Manuel was ejected again today and if that seems like a headline you've read before, you aren't incorrect. Manuel has four heave-hos in 56 games since taking over for Willie Randolph in mid-June, a total Mets fans will gladly take given his 34-22 mark. Manuel has always had a reputation as being a laidback guy, but if you count his ejection as bench coach on May 18, his getting tossed total is five, which ...
