Update: McCain has chosen someone from outside Silicon Valley: Alaska Governor Sarah Palin. As John McCain prepares to unveil his selection for a running mate today, Mitt Romney seems to be a favorite. But two former Silicon Valley CEOs are also on the short list, and they are both women: Carly Fiorina and Meg Whitman. Picking Romney would help McCain solidify his position with the Republican base, but it would also be predictable and boring. ...

While Tim Hurd has done a great job at HP, I've never felt comfortable with the way Carly was forced out. The seed to much of the success the company has experienced over the past couple of years was laid by Carly, which will become a key point should McCain choose here as VP. That being said, I think Meg has a better chance of being named VP - she will appeal to more pro-Hillary voters due to her stances on issues like abortion, and will also attract the base with her very capitalist background. Either way, McCain could do a lot worse...

And I heard, as it were, the noise of thunder: One of the four beasts saying: "Come and see." And I saw. And behold, there was the other Jesus, the Bible character, calling me from a big screen saying "Jesus is the Reason for The—V-Sign this program-and will be shu-whaaa?" Clearly, Jesus is good with all this saving Humanity and making water into wine tricks, but I'm afraid he's no match for Windows errors. [Fail]

The defendant in a much-watched file-sharing case was dealt a serious blow this week when a judge ruled he tampered with evidence in the case. After first getting notice from the Recording Industry Association of America, Jeffrey Howell, according to Ars Technica, ... uninstalled KaZaA and deleted everything in the shared folder, reformatted his hard drive, downloaded and used a file-wiping program, and then nuked all the KaZaA logs on his PC. An anonymous reader writes "The Great Internet Mersenne Prime Search (GIMPS) has apparently discovered a new world-record prime number. A GIMPS client computer reported the number on August 23rd, and verification is currently under way. The verification could take up to two weeks to complete. The last Mersenne prime discovered was over 9.8 million digits long, strongly suggesting that the new value may break the 10 million digit barrier — qualifying for the EFF's $100000 ...

There's a huge security problem in the latest iPhone 2.0.2: if you have your JesusPhone password protected, using a very simple trick gives anyone full access to your cellphone private information in Mail, contacts, and even access to Safari. The two-step trick is even simpler to the one we used in the past to gain access to the phone to install unlocking cards or jailbreak: First, password protect your phone and lock it. Then slide ...

At DEFCON, Tony Kapela and Alex Pilosov demonstrated a drastic weakness in the Internet's infrastructure that had long been rumored, but wasn't believed practical. They showed how to hijack BGP (the border gateway protocol) in order to eavesdrop on Net traffic in a way that wouldn't be simple to detect. Quoting: "'It's at least as big an issue as the DNS issue, if not bigger,' said Peiter 'Mudge' Zatko, noted computer security expert and former ...

Fleshbot's got a review up of LELO's MIA, which is a discreet (albeit vibrator purple) USB-powered vibrator. Is it good? Lux sure thinks so, and compliments it on its "several levels of vibration as well as three different settings of pulse patterns," something usually not found in smaller, non cricket bat-sized vibes. What disappointed her was the removal of the iPod-like touch controls, but the ability to vibe one out with something you have in ...
