Filed under: Misc. Gadgets A chic London restaurant and bar called Inamo is making patrons' dining experiences digital by projecting colorful menus and aesthetic patterns onto touch-sensitive tabletops. When browsing, patrons can preview the food as if it were on the plate in front of them -- only flatter, we suppose. They can also order their meals, look up neighborhood services, and select one of seven visual vibes without ever interacting with carbon-based lifeforms. Inamo ...

Jimmy Wales is opening up the Wikia Search engine to anyone who wants their own data or application to show up in results. Called Wikia Intelligent Search Extensions (WISE), it lets developers create search results based on certain keywords or rules. Wales tells me: It is like Facebook Apps for search results. Wikia Search is launching the WISE framework with a bunch of partners: Digg (returns recent frontpage headlines as results), Indeed (for job search), ...

There’s a common misconception that Google’s “next-gen” web platform called Gears only (or even primarily) enables offline capabilities for web applications. The truth of the matter is that Google’s ambitions are far greater, and the browser extension’s capabilities are more multifarious, than this reputation suggests. Gears has been available for over a year now, with the first version released not too far back in May 2007. You can see the whole version history here, but ...

Geolocation - For mobile devices that can determine the user’s current location, Gears makes this geolocation information available to applications running within the browser. The geolocation API can be used to identify the user’s position once or to watch it over time as the user moves around. Permission to access a user’s position must be granted through a special dialog, preventing unwanted snooping.

The changes affect more than just aesthetics - the Long setting apparently consists of both the ...
