If you've attended college, or at least know somebody who has, you know that students are willing to pay hundreds of dollars a term for some of the most mind-numbing texts alive. Students will wait in line for hours, or go store to store to acquire these textbooks, which might only be available in one location, knowing that to not pay these exorbitant prices and, therefore, miss out on the texts, could lead to lower ...

A number of people whose opinions I greatly respect have turned me on to Yelp over the last six months or so. Yelp is a community review site, and a great way to discover cool new places in whatever neighborhood you happen to be in. I've enjoyed using Yelp, and I wanted to participate by submitting my first review, so I created a new account there. As part of the account creation process, I was ...

Image by foundphotoslj. I am 28 now. I don’t think about the past or regret things much these days. But sometimes I wish that I had known some of things I have learned over the last few years a bit earlier. That perhaps there had been a self-improvement class in school. And in some ways there probably was. Because some of these 16 things in this article a teacher probably spoke about in class. But ...

When I first started talking about Permission Marketing ten years ago, marketers asked, "sure, but how does this help us?" A decade later, marketers look at Wikipedia or social media or the long tail or whatever trend is finally hitting them in the face and ask the same question. Here's the essential truth: This is the first mass marketing medium ever that isn't supported by ads. If a newspaper, a radio station or a TV ...

I love this. Our question as a marketer must be "How can we help our potential customers meet their goals."

This is obviously happening to Twitter in a big way right now. New people are getting turned on to Twitter because they think there's something in it for them. "I'm an internet marketer (along with millions of other people) and I can get rich using Twitter. Maybe I'll even write an ebook about how I got rich using Twitter and sell it." Ugh.I'm much more apt to befriend a dad who likes parasailing or a college student studying medicine than I am an "internet marketing guru."

"It's entirely possible it could be used that way, but it doesn't owe you anything. The question to ask isn't, "but how does this help me?" as if you have some sort of say in the matter. You don't get a vote on whether Google succeeds or whether your customers erect spam filters. The question to ask is, "how are people (the people I need to reach, interact with and tell stories to) going to use this new power and how can I help them achieve their goals?""

Management guru Peter Drucker noted that companies attracting the best knowledge workers will "secure the single biggest factor for competitive advantage." We and other forward-looking companies put a lot of effort into hiring such people. What are we looking for?At the highest level, we are looking for non-routine problem-solving skills. We expect applicants to be able to solve routine problems as a matter of course. After all, that's what most education is concerned with. But ...

The example here (routine vs non-routine) is a good example of what sets Google apart. Lots of other search companies where already there when Google arrived. But Google does it better with the "non-routine."

Ever find yourself clicking on links to music or videos and getting blasted in the face with this delightful little number? That's right -- links to any sort of music, TV shows, movies, podcasts, audiobooks or anything else available through Apple's iTunes store requires custom software to be installed on your computer before they will display thing one to you. Is it so unreasonable to expect links in your browser to resolve to, oh, I ...

There aren't so many statesmen. People who speak truth to power. Leaders who describe what they see, whether or not it serves their short-term interests. They say what needs to be said, do what needs to be done, as long as it serves the long-term needs of their constituents. No wonder we like them so much. Lawyers are sworn to be advocates. It's their duty. They take a side and they argue it. They're not ...
