(Click image for full size) The preview images for the new Blab! show at Copro-Nason in Los Angeles are up. I'm fascinated by Ryan Heshka's work (he has 19 pieces in the show, including the one shown here), which borrows themes from old science fiction pulps and takes them in new direction. Link

What follows is an open letter written by a resident of Wasilla, Alaska named Anne Kikenny. (Who was interviewed on NPR Sept. 5, 2008)I am a resident of Wasilla, Alaska. I have known Sarah since 1992. Everyone here knows Sarah, so it is nothing special to say we are on a first-name basis. Our children have attended the same schools. Her father was my child’s favorite substitute teacher. I also am on a first name ...

Nearly as many people watched Palin last night as watched Obama last Thursday. But some of those people were Obama supporters -- and they're donating to their candidate in large amounts.A Media Curves analysis found voters' perceptions of the McCain-Palin ticket improving significantly after watching her speech. But focus groups in Nevada and Michigan were less impressed.Rasmussen's voters think Obama is more qualified than Palin -- but not by an especially wide margin. And SurveyUSA's voters like Palin ...

Picasa upgrades its desktop and online components of photo-aggregation and editing tools. Most notably, Picasa Web Albums now has the ability to identify and filter photos by facial recognition. It's a little creepy, but it gives Google's photo software a leg up on the competition by being the first of its kind.

Palin is being peddled as a new kind of Republican -- a maverick and a reformer. But she's just another Rove-era Republican, who got elected by running on the three Gs. "Sarah comes in with all this ideological stuff, and I was like, 'Whoa,' " said Stein, who lost the election. "But that got her elected: abortion, gun rights, term limits and the religious born-again thing. I'm not a churchgoing guy and that was another ...

Swedish company Home Energy recently revealed an innovative wind turbine that spins in a spherical formation. Eschewing traditional rotors for a sleek orb structure, this beautiful rethinking of conventional wind turbine design utilizes the Venturi principle, which funnels wind within the turbine’s blades. The resulting spherical wind turbine features increased efficiency and lower noise levels - making it ideal for small scale energy needs such as personal home use. Best of all it’s called the ...

He was for blaming the parents before he was against it. On the pinhead front, 16-year-old Jamie Lynn Spears is pregnant. The sister of Britney says she is shocked. I bet. Now most teens are pinheads in some ways. But here the blame falls primarily on the parents of the girl, who obviously have little control over her or even over Britney Spears. Look at the way she behaves. Last night, O'Reilly was beside himself ...

Amazon today launched a beta of SoundUnwound, a website that compiles music-related data from IMDB, Amazon, Musicbrainz and user contributions, Wikipedia-style. Oh, sure, dear reader -- it sounds good, but GREAT. Just what the world needed: flamewars between goth band editors over the hopeless existential futility of NPOV, and shoegazers nominating emo kids for deletion and vice versa ad infinitum. Deep-voiced legend Don LaFontaine, best known for his trademark “In a World” voiceovers on movie trailers, has passed away at the relatively young age of 68. He passed away yesterday at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in LA after he developed pneumothorax, which is when a lung collapses and air builds up in the ...

It's why Saturday morning cartoons were once so popular and why lots of the most kid-appealing stuff is placed on the grocery store shelves at their eye-level. Mostly though, this advertising tries to be somewhat discreet. Not satisfied with the soft sell, one Dairy Queen went for a less subtle ...

Nestled in Noe Valley, a San Francisco neighborhood known for its contradictions, rests the Choy Residence, a newly remodeled 1960’s home turned modern dwelling. Terry & Terry Architecture took a decidedly “less is more” approach to the project, literally carving out the 1960’s home’s front entry and center core, straight through to the rear facade. The results of their carefully crafted subtractions is an exterior deck with a view and an entry that allows tremendous ...
