For all its supposed simplicity, Really Simple Syndication or RSS has continued to confuse and intimidate millions of people online years after its introduction. What can be done to make RSS more mainstream? Google plans to roll out a small but simple feature that could go a long way. We wouldn't be surprised to see every blog publishing service follow suit. "Follow this blog" is a clear call to action and those words will soon ...

Thought about it a bit more. Why not replace the RSS icon in address bars with a button that says "follow this page". Joe Average User might be more inclined to click on that than a funny orange square.I think I'm going to replace my in page rss icons with a little chiclet that says "follow my blog."

There has been a lot of speculation recently about an impending update to iTunes. Version 8.0, among other things, is supposed to finally bring a recommendation engine to the digital media player application. While that's interesting from a music discovery perspective, it is even more interesting to consider what this could mean in terms of an iTunes+iPhone based social networking experience. iTunes (launched 2001) and the iTunes music store (launched 2003) have come a long ...

There’s an interesting new research tool available, focusing on tags - or, more precisely, tag pairs. Tagatum’s tag spider searches blog feeds for tags, combines tags into pairs and calculates which pairs are most often used together. Those who are experienced in keyword analysis and the subtleties of SEO will probably know what to do with the tool, but if you’re clueless, the creators of Tagatum already have a couple of ideas for you. For ...

Since our initial review of Yahoo! Buzz earlier this year, not much has changed about the service. At the same time, however, the perception, acceptance, and impact of the service has changed drastically. The service has shown that it can send enormous amounts of traffic (very talkative traffic), and has displaced Digg as the most active 'social news' community. In the process, they added widgets and rss, and most recently (and most importantly) have opened ...

In response to friend's quote: “Yahoo Answers suffered because of the insipid questions and answers. Sites like that need a curator to be of any worth.”Indeed. Y! Answers suffered because of the poor quality and tremendous amount of chat, but more than that, I feel it suffered from just a general lack of investment. It took off then Y! promptly moved all their engineering to one small team in Europe and took the content off their main SERP (search engine results page). It could possibly be driving a lot of traffic into core search and provide an engaging forum for people to connect around information. The goal isn't necessarily to use it as a "selection" resource to increase the scope of information online but rather to use it as an "engagement" asset to drive people to stay on the site and connect to others.

OAuth, the open authorization protocol standard that will let users give limited access to their data to third party websites without giving away their passwords, crossed an important threshold tonight. All parties involved in building the spec have signed a covenant of non-assertion, meaning that OAuth can now be safely implemented anywhere without concern about Intellectual Property lawsuits. If you think this is too geeky for you - try out the live demo embedded below. ...

Aza Raskin at Mozilla Labs thinks there’s got to be an easier way to create Web mashups. Today, he is announcing the launch of Ubiquity, an experiment in using natural language to invoke Web services. Ubiquity is an extension to the Firefox browser that lets you type in what you want to do—insert a map, translate this page, Twitter this block of text, search on Google—and invokes one of 30 Web services. As Raskin describes ...

When I attended South by Southwest 2008, I had the pleasure of attending a panel where four somewhat lost panelists were (with difficulty) trying to come up with metrics to measure success from a social media marketing campaign. I was a little annoyed when they concluded that there were no metrics available right now, and that someone would have to come up with a new way of measuring social media success. While many people argue ...

It’s no longer an issue of whether enterprise services should be 2.0′d via widgets, RSS, and the like. CIOs & CSOs grasp the undeniability of this paradigm. But there is still a gap between the desire and reality of getting these enterprise services out the door. It’s one thing to design a Facebook application, it’s another getting it to interact with the backend systems commonly deployed in enterprise IT setups. Enter WorkLight, an Israeli startup ...
