There might be several reasons why a reader would want to be able to convert a web page to PDF, such as: to share with a non-online friend, to be able to email it or to put it into a PDF device to read later; while still retaining the original form of the page. That’s why web to PDF conversion tools are gaining popularity. But if we look it from the perspective of the site ...

You may have noticed that Google's homepage has a small message at the bottom: In Memoriam Randy Pausch (1960-2008)."Pausch, the married father of three, was an energetic and fun-loving computer science professor at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh when, in 2006, he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. A year later, despite surgery and chemotherapy, physicians discovered the cancer had spread to his liver and spleen. He had been told he had perhaps six months to ...

The Sirius-XM Merger was finally approved by the FCC today following a 3-2 vote by the commission. The final and deciding vote only came after both parties agreed to pay a $19.7 million fine for violating FCC regulations. After 16 months of MTV-esque "drama" and gnashing of teeth, the $3.6 billion merger means that subscribers of both services will now get the best of both worlds. [SF Gate]

Yesterday, I sent a quick email to let people know what time I was arriving on site. It was something simple like: "Brad will be there at 9:30AM. Thanks! EOM". Within seconds a reply came back "What does EOM mean?" In my smartypants way I responded: "End of message. Used it to save you the time of opening the message and having to reply, which by virtue of you replying has defeated its purpose. Now ...

The Actor's Prayer (12:18) Many a digger has been lost amid the thrift-store stacks of too-common records. Nothing is more disheartening than assaulting a bin of mold-encrusted record jackets, hoping for a find, and seeing copy after copy of Ed Sullivan Presents, loose Longines Symphonette collections and Columbia Special Products Christmas collections. Jackie Gleason is another of the chief offenders, with every thrift store offering your chance to own multiple copies of Jackie Gleason Presents ...

That's the one. That's the radio that Giorgio, I0YR, and I have had our eyes on. I found it in a local charity shop (location to remain secret, pending final transaction!). The one I found had no identifying plates, but with the scant info I provided in SolderSmoke 88, Steve, VE7SL, figured out what it was, and sent this picture to confirm. Not a BC-348, but instead a USMC BC-312.UGLY BEAST! Not my kind of ...

Google's Wikipedia competitor, Google Knol, officially opens its doors today. The site is already populated with several knols (definition: "an authoritative article about a specific topic"), but anyone can create their own knol as of today. The major difference between Google Knol and Wikipedia—as we pointed out in our original post—is that knols aren't collaboratively written in the same way Wikipedia articles are. Instead, a single user creates and moderates a knol. Any topic can ...

A few months ago we announced that we were testing a new product called Knol. Knols are authoritative articles about specific topics, written by people who know about those subjects. Today, we're making Knol available to everyone. The web contains vast amounts of information, but not everything worth knowing is on the web. An enormous amount of information resides in people's heads: millions of people know useful things and billions more could benefit from that knowledge. ...

I'm an unabashed Google apologist, but sometimes their blog posts hurt me a little. E.g.: "We are happy to announce an agreement with the New Yorker magazine which allows any author to add one cartoon per knol from the New Yorker's extensive cartoon repository. Cartoons are an effective (and fun) way to make your point, even on the most serious topics."

I like the concept of authorship. It's primary competitor will be books and personal/organizational websites. Why would one host that on Knol. Monetization. Well lets see if anyone publishes their book via Knol (each chapter = 1 Know article) and how much money that makes :-)Anyone?

Previously named the DS400GB, the SmartMirror is a GPS system that is mounted in place of your conventional rear-view mirror, and has a rear-facing cam input. With Navigon Mobile Navigator 6.5 inside, it's got "reality view", a 4-inch touchscreen, integrated speakers and Bluetooth and takes SD cards. It's actually got two inputs for rear-view cameras, which may be good news for the parking-skill-challenged. It sounds like a neat solution, but I'm a little unconvinced that ...
