Intro to Google InsightsI have recently been playing around with the insanely useful Google Insights for Search product. You should definitely try it out if you haven't. It's basically Google Trends on steroids, and shows you a ton of data on any search you try. An SEO wizard's dream, basically. It's described as: With Google Insights for Search, you can compare search volume patterns across specific regions, categories, and time frames. Basically you put in ...

The days when Web pages were static collections of text and graphics are long past. But as the Web matures, there's a fierce competition over which technology will propel it into a medium for rich, interactive applications. On one side of the battle lines is the original Web page description technology called HTML, or Hypertext Markup Language. Over the years, its abilities were augmented first with JavaScript, a basic programming language, and later a JavaScript-on-steroids ...

I started this blog more than 4 years ago because I wanted to respond to a story that I felt misrepresented the email exchange I had with the reporter. My concern then, was that reporters in the traditional news media, in this case the Dallas Morning News had sufficient power to create whatever perception they wanted to about whoever they wrote about. This blog was a way to combat that. That was during a time when ...

If you ever suspected it was no coincidence that the rise in childhood autism began around the same time as the advent of cable TV, a Cornell study shows you were on to something. Researchers at Cornell University claim to have established a definite link between autism rates and TV watching among toddlers in California, Pennsylvania, Washington, and Oregon. Beginning in 1980, when cable TV brought Nickelodeon and other children’s programs into people’s homes, autism ...

What do former vice president and environmental activist Al Gore and Texas oil man T. Boone Pickens have in common? Both believe the U.S. should cut back on its dependence on foreign oil and that the government needs to stop pussyfooting around on issues of greener energy, particularly wind power. Forbes website, recentlyreported that GE Energy is the leading wind turbine manufacturer in North America and that it is sold clean out of turbines until ...

Finally, here's a study that quantifies the way many Blacks live every day: dreaming, living, buying, connecting, thinking and, yes, hurting. It also sends a message that Blacks are so much more -- more than criminals, welfare recipients, athletes and overachievers. Black Americans don't all live the same way or believe the same things.

This post is not about the potential Microsoft/Yahoo merger. Instead, let's just assume for the moment that Microsoft succeeds in its bid for Yahoo. What would a Microsoft/Yahoo merger mean for startups in Silicon Valley? Some smart people whom I respect a great deal believe that a Microsoft/Yahoo merger would be bad for Silicon Valley startups. Says Bill Burnham, for example: "By swallowing up Yahoo, Microsoft will be removing one of the biggest and most ...
