Mexico has a pretty serious kidnapping problem—so serious that there is now a market for a $4,000 RFID implant procedure (plus a $2,200 annual fee) that promises to help track victims down. The system uses an implanted capsule under the skin that talks to an external GPS transmitter that you'll need to be kidnapped with in order to beam your location to the folks at Xega, who are selling the service. Anyone else see a ...

stylemessiah writes "The winner of several Eureka Science Awards in Australia is a crafty chick who devised a way to create solar cells cheaply using a pizza oven, nail polish and an inkjet printer. This was developed to address the high cost of cells and in particular for the world's poorest regions. She wanted to give the ~2 billion people around the world who don't have electricity the gift of light and cheap energy. This ...

NOTE: Before going on, I'd like to just say it's a good idea and I'm not denigrating the inventor. However, this raises an interesting question. They've patented this technology intended to help the "world's poorest regions". Aren't those two aims working at opposite ends? Usually patents are intended to keep people from 'illegally' copying a design / process, but if you truly want it to help the poorest people, the only way to really do that is allow others to copy / improve / make cheaper. I understand she's probably not the person who insisted on the patent, and I also realize that licenses can be given away for free, but I think it raises an interesting philosophical question. If you're trying to be altruistic and help the poor, then BE altruistic and do it without patents. Of course there are those who would argue that altruism doesn't /truly/ exist......

Following up on rumorage that pre-sales for the HTC Dream/G1 would start Sept. 17, TmoWorld says they've got the full skinny on T-Mobile's Android debut party: Supposedly, pre-orders will be online only for eligible post-paid customers—lasting through Oct. 3—who will get the phone on Oct. 13, the public launch day. TmoWorld says the subsidized price will be $199 w/ a two-year contract (no one-year option). Price seems to be the blurriest bit of info, possibly ...

Today, the New York Times took a close look at the fast-paced world of power tool drag racing. The inherent fun of placing lightly modified power tools on the ground and watching them tear off down the street was not lost on them, apparently. Will attention from such a big publication make power tool drag racing a more mainstream sport? One can only hope. The Times even links to all sorts of how-to's from sites ...

The video above from DIY web site Instructables demonstrates four different CD spindle-repurposing projects from start-to-finish. We've seen variations on most of these projects before, like the toilet paper dispenser, bagel holder, and cable organizer, but the video provides step-by-step instructions and a few clever tweaks for alternate uses. The bagel holder, for example, becomes a sandwich caddy with an extra cut, and the cable organizer becomes a rope and cable dispenser with a couple ...

Designer Laurent Hongisto has crafted the Lisco USB Snake as an attempt to solve that age-old (ok... decade-old) dilemma of never having a USB cable handy when you need one to charge/connect-up your device. So the design combines elements of those '90s "slap bracelets" with a USB A to mini-USB cable, wrapped up in colorful polyurethane and designed to be carried around on your wrist. Hmmm. Ok... so it looks kinda odd, and do you ...
