Wired is reporting that AT&T is now offering free WiFi hotspot browsing, including those at local Starbucks locations, for iPhone users. You can learn more about the offer from the AT&T Mobility page. Earlier this year, AT&T prematurely launched this deal and then took it down. There were loopholes with the initial launch in which early users were able to user their WiFi enabled laptops and trick the system into thinking that they were on ...

We don't have too many cameras out there in space past the moon, which is why most of our space shots are either looking outward, such as the shots taken by Hubble, or taken of Earth from the moon or closer. Which is why this video is so astounding. It's a video of the moon passing directly in front of the Earth, taken by NASA's EPOXI spacecraft from a whopping 31 million miles away. The ...

Scientists at Indian Institute of Technology and Tokai University have taken the natural features of a mosquito's mouth, and created a new type of needle that promises pain-free blood sample collection and injections. When mosquitoes bite you, it's not their mouth that hurts you: their ultra-fine proboscis dips beneath the skin, and then a muscle squeeze-relax motion draws blood out of it. The new needle, made of titanium alloys for strength, has a tiny microelectricalmechanical ...

Earlier this week Crunchgear broke the news on two new upcoming Kindle models: a smaller form factor Kindle to be released this year ahead of the holidays, and a large screen (probably 8.5×11) to come sometime next year. A couple of commenters in that post have pointed out that the large screen Kindle is perfect to target the college/university textbook market, a $5.5 billion market annually in the U.S. alone. Most students still buy print ...

I cannot wait for us to get on with the electronic book already. The vision that I would love to see become a reality is that of a school in rural Africa where the students have affordable access to all the textbooks that are available in more developed economies. For example, high-school mathematics has not changed since 1911 so, at the very least, a scanned version of all the off-copyright mathematics textbooks from that date should be available for free to anyone in the world. A single leap-frog moment similar to that which has occurred in the cellphone sector but I believe with potentially even greater consequences.

Sony's mantra of not writing checks for exclusives—or much of anything—seems to be biting them in the ass a couple times this week. There are at least four cases where the PlayStation 3 has suffered because of Sony's lack of willingness to open up the pursestrings. We knew two of these before—backward compatibility and the DualShock 3—but we only found out about the other two during the roundtable session with Sony's Jack Tretton yesterday. The ...

Oh, the drama. To recap: Bungie were going to announce a game at E3. Then they didn't. Turns out at least one of Bungie's projectsis a Halo game. That new, Bungie Halo game, to be obviously published by MS, was supposed to be unveiled during Microsoft's keynote, but according to Don Mattrick, they pulled it at the last minute. Why? Because Microsoft - perhaps catching wind of the sub-par standard of their competitor's addresses - ...

Speaking with SEGA of America president Simon Jeffery earlier today he noted that the iPhone is about as powerful as the publisher's console the Dreamcast. Jeffery said the company is delighted with how their iPhone version of Super Monkey Ball has been received by the phones many owners and detailed how the developer plans to take advantage of what he calls an upcoming and potentially major new platform for gaming.
