Forget the stock market, it’s falling apart. Invest your money in OneSeason instead, a newly launched San Francisco-based startup that lets you invest real money in professional athletes. Alex Rodriguez is a steal at $7.00 per share ($17.6 million total value). I just bought one share of Kobe Bryant for $7.48 (he’s valued at $77.6 million). The company was founded by CEO Mike Sroka and CTO DJ Burdick with $250,000 in seed funding from investor ...

Things flip. Many cultures long viewed photographs with fear, worrying that a piece of the soul disappeared when a photo was taken. Today, celebrities hire publicists who have no other job but to get their photographs to appear in print. Oprah doesn't pay authors to appear on her show, they pay publicists for the privilege... even though they are "giving away" all the ideas in their book for free. It's a tricky line to walk. ...

People and brands and organizations that stand for something benefit as a result. Standing for something helps you build trust, makes it easier to manage expectations and aids in daily decision making. Standing for something also makes it more fun to do your gig, because you're on a mission, doing something that matters. Of course, there's a cost. You can't get something for nothing. It's frustrating to watch marketers, politicians and individuals fall into the ...

"To really stand for something, you must make difficult decisions, mostly about what you don't do. We don't ship products like that, we don't stand for employees like that ("you're fired"), we don't fix problems like that. It's so hard to stand up, to not compromise, to give up an account or lose a vote or not tell a journalist what they want to hear."

I've got a little end of day advice for everyone out there that is getting whipsawed around by all the craziness in the financial markets. While this is aimed at entrepreneurs, it applies to everyone. Focus on things under your control. When I was a teenager, my dad said something to me that has stuck with me and informs many of the decisions I make and things I decide to spend my time on. He ...

I got caught up last night and this morning on the splurge legislation. My favorite summary was from Henry on Clusterstock. In that post, Henry wrote:The Treasury has complete discretion over the prices it pays for crap assets (the most important provision in the whole document as far as the taxpayers are concerned). "The Secretary make such purchases at the lowest price that the Secretary determines to be consistent with the purposes of this Act." ...

As you can tell by the number of the posts on this subject, I think we are in a very serious financial situation in this country. It’s bad for everyone and like many others while I think the Bailout is necessary, I would prefer any solution that doesn’t involve the government. Unfortunately, I don’t think a pure market based solution is possible. That said, I considered what it would take for me to part with ...

According to some pundits, the simplest solution to our economic crisis is to suspend or abolish the mark to market accounting rules. For those unfamiliar. Mark to market is where a company reprices their assets on a daily basis to the most recent market transaction price. If asset prices are falling, this means that the total value of assets on a banks or other company’s books falls. When the total value of assets fall, then ...

LIVE Android Unveiling Coverage Here Google's Gphone won't be officially unveiled for another 30 minutes or so, but more and more details are emerging. The latest: Amazon has confirmed that the new phone will come preloaded with its MP3 music store (kudos to VentureBeat for getting this yesterday). If Amazon and Google integrate this well, this will make the Gphone at least as compelling a music player as Apple's iPhone, which is saying something. The ...

Google has announced that their Google Maps product now supports public transit directions. This is very exciting news for me as a person who loves public transit. In my testing this morning, I give the system a grade of C. It's a good first start and will get you to your destination but they have a lot of work to do. For example, there are many places where multiple trains share the same tracks but ...

Designed to complement its S3 storage service and EC2 web services, the CDN will be available later this year and will provide users with a high performance method of distributing content to end users. The role of a Chief Technology Officer (CTO) in a company is an incredibly critical, but poorly understood one. Unless a member of the founding team is a strong technology visionary that occupies that role, many start-ups neglect the position. Instead, they assume the CIO or VP of Engineering can be responsible for setting technology strategy as well as delivering on it – an impossible burden even for the most talented technology manager. Within our ...

For years, one of the biggest challenges facing New York city based startup companies has been the competition for technical talent. It was very difficult for a venture-backed startup to compete with the compensation packages offered by the big investment banks. Stock options had a hard-time overcoming oversized cash bonuses. While no one is happy with the turmoil we're seeing facing the financial services sector, and no one is happy to see mass layoffs, this ...

Now, simulcasting live sports on the Web is de rigeur, and the networks -- CBS ...

Amid growing scrutiny from government regulators in the U.S and Europe, Google is amending its privacy practices and keeping the IP addresses of consumers who do searches on Google for a shorter period of time. It will also start anonymizing the data it ...
