this February, Google released its Social Graph API, which allows developers to give users the option to easily find data on their social connections around the web. Google itself, however, hasn't really implemented any of this technology yet. Starting today, however, it seems Google is starting to surface some of this information from your Social Graph in your Google Profile, which might be a first sign that Google is planning to do more with these ...

Can traffic to a Presidential Candidate’s homepage be used to gauge who will win this year’s election? Hitwise has published recent data on the traffic both American presidential candidates have seen in the last month (ending 8/23), and while the results may not shed much light on the forthcoming election’s outcome, they reveal a few interesting trends. Hitwise has ranked each state by two criteria: its contribution to each site’s total traffic, and the the ...

Have you turned up your nose at YouTube for being born from low quality, financially unsustainable, pirated content? If you've made that argument in conversation before (and we now many people do) - new claims from YouTube itself now indicate that you'd be wrong. The official Google Blog made a post this morning following up on a New York Times story last week where the company claimed that 90% of the owners of copyrighted content ...

For Web companies looking to expand abroad, Russia needs to be at the top of their list of markets to enter. Russia has the fastest growing Internet population in Europe, followed by France and Spain. In a comparison of 16 European Internet populations by country, comScore reports that Russia’s Internet audience for the month of June grew 27 percent year over year, compared to 21 percent growth in France and 15 percent growth in Spain. ...

Some scientists at University of Manchester in the UK and Dolby Canada in Vancouver have worked out a way to capture 3D info of complex-textured objects really simply with a camera flash. You should care about this because it's likely to make the textures applied to characters and objects in computer games way more realistic: normally texture capturing needs expensive devices like laser scanners. Instead this technique uses something a bit like high dynamic-range photography, ...

Marketers cause unhappiness. Really, when you strip it down to bare essentials, that’s our job: to make consumers unhappy with what they currently have, so they’ll buy what we’re selling. I don’t like this much. I never have. (BTW, this is Kat writing. Invariably, people assume it’s Jason, being that it’s his blog—anyway, moving on…) While my career has been what could charitably be called “eclectic,” marketing—more specifically writing marketing copy—has been a big chunk ...

What exactly, does Web 2.0, social media and even SEO have to do with public relations? Everything! While I prepare to relocate (I’m moving next week!), I was fortunate to have the help of James Duthie, a serial guest blogger from Online Marketing Banter, a blog on social media, marketing, and more. You can subscribe to more of his ramblings here. A few weeks ago I wrote a post over at SEO Scoop comparing the quality of search engine traffic against social media traffic. The aim of my little experiment was to ...

The real value to a professional SEO is not that they can get you on top. It's that they can KEEP you on top! I’m sure we’re all seeing strange behavior from the big G these days. Or maybe it’s just me. We’re used to seeing things like a general drop in positions for most of our target terms across the board. If our top tier stuff dropped, we could expect a drop in our ...

I am confused. In Sunday's NYT, Roberta Smith declares that public art is "one of contemporary art's more exciting areas of endeavor and certainly its most dramatically improved one." Sure. There may be an argument to be made in that direction. But Smith did not make it. First, her definition of 'public art' is curious. She specifically excludes earthworks -- many of which, most famously Robert Smithson's Spiral Jetty, Nancy Holt's Sun Tunnels, and Michael Heizer's ...

Some of my buddies have expressed astonishment that I get approximately thirty-six hours of standby with my iPhone, so I'm sharing my settings. Note: this is my second 3G iPhone--I returned the first one because I was getting only five hours of standby time. This is my usage screen. One thing to notice: I don't talk much on the phone--"talk is not cheap" in my book. I am totally an email/tweet centric person. This clearly ...

Guy's approach is a bit extreme- I really don't think I should turn off all of the advanced features on my phone. But it's a good example that the iPhone's standby time can be improved with some customization. We just need an app to support Locations and swap settings like the Macs too.
