Imagine what would happen if GM and Ford collaborated to invest in the components and architecture of a better public transport network -- and then licensed it for free to cities, states, and countries. Imagine what would happen if pharma players directly invested in better hospitals and clinics -- instead of in trying to own the relationship with doctors, and furiously outspending one another when marketing blockbusters. Imagine what would happen if Wal-Mart invested in ...Shared by Adam Crowe (8) Alex Mann (3) Aneel (32) atul (95) Clay (26) Denis Gobo (29) Eino (17) erhan (54) Fred Schechter (75) Gautam (16) James Socol (4) Jared Hanson (11) Josh (26) Macintoy (10) Mark Cheverton (2) Matt (15) Niranjan Tulpule (1) Rafi (16) Roshan (21) Simon (34) Todd McKinney (3) Tommi Rissanen (10) Trevor Gerzen (8)- Clay said: I think that this is apples and organges. There is a huge cost, relative to open-source software development, to building public infrastructure such as roads and squares. Further, the benefits to Wal-Mart and P&G from such investments are questionable at best. Cars run on roads, and people like public squares, but the analogy doesn't hold for this new browser because it is enabling fundamentally new capabilities for GOOG. That is, control of its own destiny for web-based apps like GMAIL, GCAL, etc and the basis to compete with MSFT in the OS layer. Many future developers are going to skip the Windows layer and develop apps directly for the web on the back of Chrome and efforts like it.

I gave a talk a couple months ago at Ideo and for some reason I decided to "dis" everyone. Not anyone there. I'm not a complete idiot. Ideo is of course a brain trust, and a gift to ethnography, anthropology, innovation, creativity. I did let fly at many of the pretenders in these fields. And the crowd was not amused. They assumed, I think, that with every act of criticism I was anointing myself as ...- Charles said: Nice to see Jerry on the list.

The understanding that platforms are markets is one of the most vital differences between revolutionaries and laggards across today's strategyscape. Who else knows that platforms are really markets? Google, of course. Who's blind to it, and still plays by yesterday's rules? Microsoft, AOL, Yahoo. But that's just a start: the most interesting examples come from players outside tech industries altogether: Ford, the Gap, and Bear Stearns, to name just a few players trapped by platform ...Shared by andrew (5) Aneel (32) atul (95) Baldo (7) Barbara Ling (0) Cast42 (19) Clay (26) David (14) Dev (1) dominiccampbell (24) Eino (17) Frankie W (3) Greg (8) Javed (139) Josh (26) Josh (2) jproffitt (2) Lou (1) Mahesh (9) MASTERMIND (45) Michael (12) Nic Brisbourne (1) Paul Roberts (10) Peter (2) Sean (7) Simon (34) Steve (3) subbu (28) Tommi Rissanen (10) WebLeOn (23) willdeluca (7)- Dev said: Note to self: 'use markets to alter the basis of competition, topple incumbents with domino effects, and atomize the value chain'.

How I became a soldier in the Georgia-Russia cyberwar, by Evgeny Morozov | Slate Magazine (4)
permalinkAs Russian and Georgian troops fight on the ground, there's a parallel war happening in cyberspace. In recent weeks, Georgia's government Web sites have been besieged by denial-of-service attacks and acts of vandalism. Just like in traditional warfare, there's a lot of confusion about what's going on in this technological battle—nobody seems to know whether this is a centralized Russian attack, the work of a loose band of hackers, or something else. Several Linux users in the Lifehacker Desktop Show and Tell Flickr group are showing off their Ubuntu Hardy Heron desktops—dressed up as a Mac. Reader Stefan Neagu says: Isn't it beautiful?
