To complement the poll we ran this week about streaming music sites, we sourced data from comScore about the Internet Radio industry. comScore's data shows that the big Internet companies still dominate, specifically AOL Radio and Yahoo Music. In contrast, our poll - the second annual time that we've run it - shows that last.fm and Pandora are the favorites of our readers. Is this a case of geek trends being at odds with mainstream? ...

We still haven't heard what TechCrunch impresario Mike Arrington thinks of tinyCrunch, which makes a living condensing TechCrunch posts. But maybe Mike hasn't seen it -- it's been down for the last day. Founders Jason Wilk and Matthew Glueckert say the site was hacked and they've spent the last 24 hours or so trying to get it back up. They don't know who or why, but given the type of damage to their files, they ...

While it can sometimes seem like Skype has been around forever, today only marks the 5th anniversary of the popular VOIP client. When it was first released, Skype marked a huge improvement in voice quality over any other VOIP client at the time. Just a few days after its release, Skype already had close to 10,000 users online at any time. Since then, the company has added plugins, video calls, voicemail, Skype to phone calls, ...

I may lose my “early adopter badge” for saying this, but I do not see how Ubiquity really helps anyone. Given that it is a 0.1 release, I know it is far from complete. However, it seems like there is a lot of development required to really make the browser a platform, and make it easier for people to use the Internet as a service. When I say a lot, I mean a minimum of ...

Amazon's Mechanical Turk has fallen prey to social media spammers and it is now full of requests to spam bookmarking services for pennies per link. Although these HITs may stop short of being "fraud" in the legal sense of the word, they are certainly dishonest and unsavory. In addition to these spam bookmarking requests, we're also seeing HITs for Diggs, Stumbles, Slashdots, etc. of spammers' web pages and web sites. In case you're unfamiliar, Amazon's ...

Yesterday, Google announced the winners of the Android Developer Challenge I, a contest that awarded cash prizes to the most innovative and promising applications designed for the upcoming mobile OS, Android. The ten top teams received $275,000 and 10 other teams received $100,000. The ADC Gallery lists all the winners as well as the finalists. Although Google has already named their winners, we decided to browse through the gallery to find the apps that we're ...

two interesting things here:1. I thought this quote by Eric Schmidt Google CEO was really great (funny):"By the year 2019, it's going to be possible to have an iPod-like device that will have 85 years of video on it. So you will be dead before you watch the whole [thing]."Also the idea that social networks are like air, this hits it right on the head:"Brand marketers that may be tempted to build their own social networks need to consider that there may not be room in people’s lives for more than one or two. They will need to plug into the social “air” supply that the large networks are building across the Web so that consumers can stay connected to their existing networks."Any site we're thinking about building should be built on top of these "air supplies".Which gets me thinking about using googles framework as a way of possibly be more relevant in their search results (so you think that would help?).

cab4me sounds pretty money: “cab4me enables you to easily call a cab to any location worldwide. You do not need to know the number of the local cab company. You do not need to enter or even know the address you want to be picked up at. You do not need to place a call. With cab4me you can order a cab to your current location with a single click.”

Today, Comcast announced that it will amend its Acceptable Use Policy and add a clause to it that will establish a "monthly data use threshold" of 250 GB per month. This effectively puts a cap on the amount a Comcast user can download per month and codifies an informal policy Comcast was already enforcing. While 250GB is a large amount of data right now, it won't be once a large number users start watching HD ...

There’s an interesting debate brewing around what Robert Scoble describes as the passionates vs the non passionates, or alternatively described as the first adopter/ Crunchmemeosphere vs the rest of the world. Loren Feldman’s contribution is as always directly to the point, and the point remains one of an event horizon of echo within a small statistical group of tech lovers vs the greater community. Multitudinous echoes awoke and died in the distance. . . . ...

First came 360, launched in 2005 as an early attempt to get Yahoo into social networking, was unceremoniously shut down earlier this year. In 2006 Yahoo was unable to close a transaction with Facebook, despite being willing to pay up to $1.62 billion. Nor could they pull the trigger on a $1 billion Bebo deal (Bebo went to AOL for $850 million). Now Yahoo has shut down Mash, which launched less than a year ago ...

Thanks to the always reliable Coolfer for digging up this video from IFC, which features a two-part interview with Vimeo founder Jakob Lodwick, Idolator's Maura Johnston and Muxtape founder Justin Ouellette. Double thanks to Coolfer for watching and transcribing the most relevant part for us: In part two, some questions were posed to Ouellette ...
