Time Magazine says that when Sarah Palin took office as mayor, she approached the town librarian and asked how to go about banning books from the town library: [Former Wasilla mayor] Stein says that as mayor, Palin continued to inject religious beliefs into her policy at times. “She asked the library how she could go about banning books,” he says, because some voters thought they had inappropriate language in them. “The librarian was aghast.” The ...

Piss-poor scandal-sheet The Daily Mail has a hilariously breathless account of a giant stainless steel Klingon fighting-knife received by police during a knife-amnesty; to hear them tell of it hooded thugs are roaming the streets with Klingon duelling swords looking for little old ladies to terrorise. A spokesman for police in Gloucester, where it was surrendered, said: "It is a particularly nasty weapon that can, literally, take someone's head off. We are very glad it ...

Whahhaha!! The next thing we need now, is someone to actually go out and murder someone using a betleH. Think of the headlines! For a cool overview of other Klingon weapons: http://www.klingonimperialweaponsguild.org/pages/kristak.htmYou can buy replicas of ALL of these, btw. The one features in this new article is a pretty bad replica, btw.

This made me snort. An extremely dangerous weapon in the hands of someone trained to use it. Thankfully Klingons aren't real. And it is a horrible design for a weapon. It just looks scary but it is damn near just a sharp shield. The Star Trek folks worked very hard to make it look menacing, but it is just silly. I know it is based on a combination of martial warts weapons, but there is a reason the knife and its longer cousin the sword are so common. They work. This thing... just damn.

Gabe Newell, head of the critically acclaimed studio sparked a bit of controversy when he repeatedly attacked the PS3's difficult development architecture, calling it a "waste of time." His studio refused to work on a PS3 version of The Orange Box, leaving it to EA to do the eventual PS3 port. However, it looks like the continued success of the PS3 ...

In this great little Instructable, Morfmir shows you how to make a "Viking spoon," using only handmade, historically accurate viking hand-tools. You need: Axe: any small hand axe will do fine. It just needs to be sharp. A good hand axe weighs around 500-600g hammer: you need a heavy hammer. If it is to small it will not have enough force to split the wood. wedge: A heavy iron wedge made for splitting firewood will ...

MIT researchers made progress using viruses to assemble microbatteries that are half the size of a human cell. Paula Hammond, Angela Belcher, and Yet-Ming Chiang and colleagues have already used the viral assembly method to make a battery's anode and electrolyte and hope to fabricate the cathode next, resulting in a complete device that could someday power biosensors or medical implants. (Seen here is an array of the battery electrodes, each one just four micrometers ...

Genetically speaking, Finns and Italians are the most atypical Europeans. There is a large degree of overlap between other European ethnicities, but not up to the point where they would be indistinguishable from each other. Which means that forensic scientists now can use DNA to predict the region of origin of otherwise unknown persons (provided they are of European heritage). These are among the conclusions to be drawn from a genetic map of Europe, produced ...

The TSA maintains a list of "suspicious" fliers who do things like forget to take their sewing scissors out of their knitting bags before boarding a flight. To this list, they have added 16,500 fliers who forgot to bring ID to the airport, though they say that forgetting your ID will no longer brand you forever as a potential terrorist. Forgetting your sewing scissors will still go down on your permanent record, though. The TSA ...
